Event Description

Here’s that rarest of comodities, alt-country that matters. Nashville’s Elizabeth Cook comes across as a true and natural Queen of the Honky Tonks. Her big twang-heavy vocals (squarely in the tradition of heroes Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton) are her biggest asset — though smart original material and a sly sense of humor don’t hurt any. Plus she does a version of the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning” that one-ups the original. Catch a rising star in an intimate setting when Cook visits Spencer’s Stadium Tavern on Saturday. The Vulgar Boatmen open. Hoosier-philes, take note: Cook’s lead guitarist is Tim Carroll, late of Indiana punk outfit the Gizmos. Look for a mini-Gizmos reunion during the Boatmen’s set.

Much to my aggravation I missed Elizabeth and Tim out here opening for Mel Tillis (!) at a native-peoples megacasino. BUT! I obtained CDs by these folks and you should, like, ATTEND THE SHOW, and as you might expect: muthfackin sweethearts. Go! You'll be sorry if you don't! Make your mama proud!

Yeah, of course there are other tastemakers - I vaguely mention that we all have our own filtering mechanisms and that will continue. Social networking and blogs will become more and more important - as will ways of communicating that we can't conce…

Hey John, since you are the only person I know who would know: Are the models that drive satellite radio producing any revenue for the artist? You don't mention satellite services but to me, not having one, it seems to be a logical evolution to bet…

I predict that labels may not go away, but they will become less important--as will traditional broadcast radio. Ten years from now we will all have internet-based radio in our cars. And the taste-maker-gate-keepers may not all be labels. They might…

I think it's significant that iTunes acquired LaLa, a streaming site (which I use to preview or rather pre-listen to new releases). With the likely release of Spotify in the U.S., and the fact that Rhapsody already has a subcription streaming servic…

John- do you think there will be one master archive of all music in various formats (Wav, MP3, etc)? I think you are right on with your predictions but I wonder about the logistics. Will it be like the current distro model where you can get these r…

Thanks, man. I'm not second-guessing whether SubPop was ever actually part of the major system - it seems like they did some sort of P&D deal around the time Mammoth and Matador did, but I don't recall for sure. Anyway they are an indie currently an…
