The Indiana Music Archive and Online Community

On the heels of last year's impromptu four-song set at South By Southwest, Split Lip/Chamberlain are reuniting for one weekend this spring. First is a set in Louisville on May 1, then it's back to Indianapolis for a show on Sat., May 2, at Birdy's. On Sunday the band will play in Chicago to help kick off the publication of "Burning Fight," a book about the early/mid-1990s hardcore punk scene.

The band had a complicated relationship with the scene and with itself. I'm curious if anyone on MFT has any thoughts on Split Lip/Chamberlain, the band's place in Indianapolis musical lore and how you feel about the reunion show?

1st date w/ my wife was to see Split Lip & Planet Earth @ The ICC. Too bad we went on Saturday and they played on Friday. Those guys were huge when I was in high school.

The shows in Lousiville, Indy and Chicago will be the original line up. I see some old friends in this thread!

split lip was my induction into local music that was closer to my age range, a band i heard grow through time, a band that was local but that didnt matter because everyone knew they were good enough to not just be labled an "Indiana" band.

because of them i got to see other bands i never wouldve found. like seeing the Zero Boys at the ICC... last band to play that night... i cant remember who was on drums, but one of the sticks was just, well, a stick, like from a tree. i got hit by a drunk punk at an all ages show, but all the straight edgers were gone by that time... so it made me feel cooler. the same goes for really liking Antennae playing REALLY loud.

there was a lot of worry about liking a band that so many people disliked for being "preachy"...but i dont remember anyone acting like the stage was a pulpit... the songs were dense teenage reflections on friendships, geography, growing up not knowing what to do but knowing whats right.... thats what i got from it.

i remember being excited hearing the "for the love of the wounded" tape, hearing the sound open up a little, stepping away from metal leanings and turning down the gain a little bit. it was proof that these guys were growing up.

then the cd on Doghouse Records came out... mine says split lip... a year later it said Chamberlain. then "emo" blew up and they were hot shit, but it didnt sound the same to me. the 'growing up' started to sound like they were giving up on rocking and just playing pop music. it got too quiet, too far away from the ringing in Brebuf's cafeteria, the ICC, the KoC.

This is Mars Needs Women's, first band name. We got our flyers torn down Kirkwood by some Jaycee guy I remember, wearing his little red vest.

I'm all for MFT and the artists both making some money whether it's NP or not. I'm glad there is another way of getting us out there. If I would have sold an album in the 80s, I remember most little labels and artists would be happy to sell their t…

PJ- I thought of that too! I could use a new Ping hat. We aren't too far down the road of the NP thing to turn back. But John is right, if we can find a way to funnel money to artists then I'm all about having MFT make some of that transaction. It…

I tried to watch 100 Ways but I could feel my life force draining. Haven't the Japanese made some horror films about this video?
