Musical Family Tree

The Indiana Music Archive and Online Community

okay, i will kick it off:

i guess all the good experiences out weighed the bad. my pubescent years were spent (much like the rest of my life) revolving around music. growing up in martinsville proved to be a little more challenging than one would think. there was one music store, Video City (which was actually a video rental store owned and operated by Kerry of Plan 9 fame), where you could buy albums by The Dead Milkmen, Black Flag, any good '80's Rap, and later NIN, Nirvana, Pearl Jam (before walmart came to town). Obviously there were no shows in M'ville, but i was blessed with an angel...a girl whose family moved from broad ripple to martinsville in the summer of 1992. her parents would drive us to shows in broad ripple or bloomington. this was the first time in my life that i knew there were other people like me, who were not willing to abide by the status quo, and who didn't necessarily agree with everything they were fed by the proverbial "man". the soundtrack to my life at the time consisted of cassette tapes by Planet Earth, Velkro Fish, Neenah Foundry, and The Plastic Cheeses, as well as many others. i don't know if any of these people are still alive, but if they are, i would like to say thank you for enriching my life with your music. when all of my friends were singing along to boyz2men i was thinking about the humanity of social relations like in (Velkro Fish song) "Janitor". when everyone was down with "OPP" i was "flying down 37, my sweet heaven" thinking about the summertime girl Planet Earth was evoking. It wasn't Seattle, and it wasn't L.A. or N.Y.C., but it was something of our own, with midwestern sensabilities and a big "fuck you" to anyone who told us to leave well enough alone.
regards,
johntaylor

Plan 9, what a crazy store. Is Kerry still alive? I heard he had to move into a home. I hope he is doing well.
I think Jake Petfoff would appreciate the Velkro Fish shout out. He's on this site somewhere.

Brad of the Plastic Cheese would definitely appreciate your story. He's a great dude, and they were a hell of a great time see! (hell, they were all great guys--even though they stole our mascot--fuckers!)

BTW, that's to be read like "...mascot. Fuckers." and not "mascot-fuckers" which is a totally different thing. Although I certainly would not have put it past them...

Guess I couldn't get enough of the damned place so I started working there. I miss Vitello, Scott, My Lawyer, the boys and "girls" downstairs, the many many bands, carrying kegs, playing the out of tune piano while waiting to go on, and everyone in the scene. Even Phil Tracof(sp?) drunk and beligerent

Ahhh yes Martinsville, wound up BACK here in 95' after living in Bloomington since 81' or so. Never would have heard any different music (among other things) had I lived in Martinsville my entire life.Kind of ironic, I never actually ran into Kerry here. My last memory of him is him buying pitchers of beer for me and this girl I liked,at the Vid, for several nights in a row. That had to have been 94'.
