About Me
AKA: Charles Silver - Photographer and artist.
AKA: Augustus X Augustus - Artist.

Bloomington: 1969 - 1989.
Louisville: 1989 - 1991.
Venice Beach, Los Angeles: 1991 - 1995. KXLU !
Louisville: 1995 - 2008
New Orleans and Louisville and New Orleans: 2008

Among the many odd and crazy things I did during my two decades in Bloomington working as *'manager'*/photographer with The Dancing Cigarettes* from about August of 1979 until August 1982 is among my favorites.

I still love them all but *they were absolutely impossible to manage*. I produced (i.e., raised the cash) their first demo tapes recorded in Lafayette at the Dow Jones' basement studio. These sessions resulted in their first 4-song EP and included "Puppies In A Sack," "Mr. Morse," "Pop Doormat," and "Best Friend." I loaned them one of their Fender Twin Reverb amps, and using the EP and some cassette tapes I booked almost all of their out of town tour dates, among other things. I think I still have the phone bills to prove it. I know I still have one of two of their "poor man's copyright" packages. It remains sealed and contains the EP, casettes of live performances, posters/art work and typed lyrics to about 30 songs.

I have fallen out of touch with the DC's. I stayed at Jacci's in Brooklyn in March of 1988 and came down with a case of bacterial pneumonia with septicemia which put me in a hospital for ten days. Tim Noe, bless him, came to visit me in hospital. I saw John briefly at work in B'ton about ten or twelve years ago. I got in touch with GDon about two or three years back and ordered all of the DC's CDs - cool ...

I am still friends with M. Malice.

I was friends with Rat Rondell ... er ... Jack Whitebread. I published his first collection of poems: Big, Red and Shiny. He blew me off when I couldn't come up with $300 to bail him out of jail in North Carolina. For some crazy reason he was sure I had the cash and was simply unwilling to help. Nothing could be further from the truth. I would gladly have bailed him out. Still would.

I was/am friends (but out of touch) with Bill E. Goat. I encouraged his entry into photography by talking to Prof. Reginald Heron at the I.U. Fine Art Photo Dept. I got him to let Bill E. into photo classes even though he was not enrolled. I bought two of the three photos from his first show at the Submarine.

I lost touch with too many friends as we all moved away and around but I remain in contact with many of the great friends I made in Bloomington including Andy Mahler, David Ebbinghouse, and Brian Gephart. Less frequently with Bill "Willie" Schwarz and others. There are others I could/should mention but time is short, forgive me.

I still get to B'ton on rare occasions. Too many fascists in government there and too much suburban sprawl for my tastes. Since 1988 I have owned a hideout in the country and up in the hills near Louisville, KY. Now I split my time between there and New Orleans when I am not traveling elsewhere.

I am still doing photography and art and sometimes, though rarely, I perform with musicians and additional entertainers.

Lately I am working on long term photography projects in and around New Orleans and I am always working on my personal photography and other things.

Here is a pre-press invite to my next photography show:

SIGNS OF LIFE: Subcultures of New Orleans Post-Katrina

and, You can view a Photography Profile Page Here

I keep pretty busy so don't spend much time socializing online or offline. I do get out to some live shows in Louisville (where I usually run into Dan Willems and Heather) and in New Orleans I seem to average a show a night.

I am happy to have found this group and will try to post some of my 'Indiana Music' related photos when I find the time.

I'll stop now, I think I have said way too much.

New Home in New Orleans

New Home - New Orleans 2008

Actually an old home which is new to me. It is in the St. Roch/New Marigny; very near the CANO Colton School studios (and everything else).

This is a screen shot from a google street view, best straight on image I currently have.

It needs some minor restoration and cosmetics to become a great place. I will be attending to it starting next week around the 14th of January. I look forward to it… Continue

Cool. Hope you can make it if you're in town. Didn't I see somewhere on here about a band in the area with Pineapple in the name. Seems like I saw you mention them. I'd like to invite them too.

Hey Charles! I'm glad to see you're still kickin' out new photog work. Excellent! My voice has been quiet, but it's all a big carousel, so things will spin around for me again. I will absolutely pass along your greetings to Miriam, as well as your photo site. She'll be delighted. And I'm enjoying your (and many others') reminiscences. Memory serves indeed....

Howze trix, Charles?! Hey man - saw this guy's work on the cover of Oxford American and went to his website - you probably are already familiar with him, but if not, check out the portfolios at severiotruglia.com - I love his stuff !! The O.A. cover of the girl & blue ribbon pig is absolute genius - her outfit is over the top, sheer genius... Ellie May Clampett, Opie Taylor, Aunt Jemima... but so subtle.... awesome.

I'm sorry, I left a reply for you, but posted it on my own comments page. Damn. Click on my name and scroll down to read it.

I'm sure we met in Bloomington. Nice to meet you again.

Charles, I can't say that I remember you from Bloomington, which is surprising because we certainly seem to know a lot of the same people. I have a question. That picture of William Burroughs(at your website); was that when he came to Bloomington circa 1983 or so? I interviewed him then. It was one of the great disasters of American letters. I winced when I saw the picture.

Hi Charles, got the Walking Ruins, Cannon Fodder for the Class War and my own Frowny Frown for sale, $10 each. I may still have a copy of the Dancing Cigs retrospective that I did in the 90s, School of Secret Music. If I can find one I'll throw that in for free for old times sake. Write me at john-terrill@sbcglobal.net for specifics...
