Avant/Outsider Music Group

Avant/Outsider music is music that deconstructs, critiques, or just plain ignores standard musical forms, music which tries to be different and new. This group is for fans and practitioners of that which is somewhat out of the ordinary.See More

About Me
Well, most of the '80's and early '90's are a blur, but here goes: late '80's - "alternative" and jazz buyer, Karma Records; general manager, WQAX (including organizing some street dances); host of "The Real Rock -n- Roll Radio Show", "Uncle Billie's Thrill Night Review", "The Western Lands", "Radio Free Bloomington" on WQAX; produced Bloomington cassette compilation "Hoagy Picks the Hits", was on several Live From Bloomington selection committees; performed live at several Snowy Nights and Culture Shocks (live poetry skree, usually with Bob Wagner) . . . early to mid '90's - co-founded lit/rant zine "Bears On Text", manager Sam Goody's; sometime music critic for "Ryder" magazine; co-host of "Melody Unasked For" on WFHB . . .

Started with The Belgian Waffles! in 1986 and The Catkillers in 1987; left the Bloomington/Nashville area to join the other Waffles in Louisville in 1997; in Louisville continued with the Waffles! as well as joining country/blues/punk freaks Mudflap with ex-Bloomingtonians Elijah Pritchett, Matt Whitaker, and Rob Stockwell. Also formed avant/improv combo the Butchertown All Stars with Tony Woollard, Josh Metlyng, and Norman Minogue. Left TBW! after the 20th anniversary celebration to concentrate on my own projects.

Currently I am recording and performing solo as Hoosier Pete and working with various folk in a noise ensemble I call Black Kaspar. For details, see www.myspace.com/hoosierpete2 and www.myspace.com/blackkaspar .

The Capacity to Affront

Thought I would cross-post this little story from the death of everything, since it is relevant to this site.  Enjoy!

I'm not an innocent when it comes to this.  The very first time I stepped onto a stage with a guitar in my hands, at Bloomington's Second Story back in '86, the primary goal was to send a few shock waves through the crowd.  We had…

The "American Idolization" of Popular Vocal Styles

I have no problem with American Idol.  I watched a couple seasons, got bored with the concept, then stopped watching.  No big deal.  I think it has exactly as much to do with music as the Guitar Hero or Rock Band video games do.  Furthermore, I think it's clear that the show itself understands it isn't about music, given that the show's only real judge, Simon Cowell, critiques performances exclusively in the light of commerce (see…

The Death of Punk Rock; or, They Finally Pulled the Plug on the Old B****

I have this thing where I try to focus on an anticipated event in the future with such concentration and detail that it's the next best thing to time traveling. And then, for fun, when the actual event arrives, I try to remember with all possible clarity the past time when I imagined the moment I am currently living. In this way, I will myself unstuck in time.

Back when punk rock meant a lot to me, I tried to imagine the point at which culture will completely consume and digest my… Continue

Miriam's Story of the Cramps

Miriam, the first Cramps drummer, is blogging about the early days of the band:

http://kicksville66.blogspot.com/

Everyone I knew in the 80's Bloomington scene loved the Cramps. For fans, casual or otherwise, this is a fun read. And those early pictures of Poison Ivy are priceless.

Enjoy!

Well thank you so much! I'm always glad to hear that anyone has listened to my music. My favorite album is my first one, "Dr. Ray". The song "cos" is my favorite song I've ever made (on a good set of speakers). I also like the album "Porch" a lot. I always arrange my albums so that the ones I want listened to the most are first. "Nip Yeh" contains a Sonics cover, the song "Arab" from the album "Savage Young Sonics", I'm especially proud of it because I think it sounds a lot like the original (besides the end).. Non of my albums really have what I would consider much of a good flow (besides maybe "Dr. Ray"). I'm working on it. By the way, funny you said to listen to "Human Fly". It was the first song I heard by the Cramps, and I liked it. That's why I downloaded their discography, which disappointed me.

It's the same as traffic school, yeah. At the end I said, "Congratulations on having your violations dismissed--now everybody can go celebrate with a beer!" The kid next to me started laughing.
Whatever you do, don't sit in the front; those people are the trying to be the shining stars of traffic school, and you will want to kill one of them. There is no homicide school...

Hey Bill, Really enjoyed your blog about car music and traffic. I have been working on a blog about cassettes for a while and hope to have it up soon, or maybe a group for cassette fiends. Wanna help?
