I was the original bass player for "The Repellents" After we disbanded "Musical Suicide" , I married Greg Stout, the original Bass Player for Toxic Reasons (War Hero, Drunk and Disorderly). We have one daugher, Bianca (yes, after Bianca Jagger) 19 and a soon to be 1 year old Grandson named Liam (after Liam Gallagher of Oasis. Check out their photos! I also played hockey with and against men and was actually more well known for that in this city than music. After years of playing and coaching, I had an injury to my spinal cord and am totally disabled.
What bands are you or have you been in?
After quiting "The Repellents", I moved back to Cincinnati and formed "Musical Suicide"
We took the Bad Brains all over town buying every bit of smoke we could find - it was hilarious. I remember the Rasta man conversation too haaaaaahahha!
'Freak Show' was never played again by us, true - that 'circus music on acid' feel was all yours hon! I hum that bass line all the time, it is etched in my brain, what little's left of it!
I loved your essay in "Stories for Shorty." The JC reunion show at Southgate House was great. The guys all rocked harder than any of the young so-called punks out there today. I'd have to say BPA was the best of bunch -- they blew my mind on Saturday.
After you left, Julie played bass and we did 4-5 more shows. Then, after that, Yukki, Lumpy and me joined with Ricky and Rapper and formed the Primates. We ( The Primates ) won " Best Alternative Band in Indiana" award in '85. It was held at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis at the circle. The Mayor, Indiana state represenative Mahern ( Paul's brpther) , Bob and Tom, Mike Ahern and Debbie Knox we just a few of the luminaries in attendance that evening. The " Best of Indy Awards" was the name of the event. Jot was runner up. When we went up on stage and received the award, Ricky shouted " Human pyramid!", and Jot + Primates made a human pyramid about 7 ft. high. Later that evening , it was on the channel 13 news..a 30 second clip..and the human pyramid was the only footage shown...
The Repellents reformed again in 1990 and played for a year or so..we even covered some Zero Boys songs...
You were always the " Heart and Soul" of the original lineup.
Years ago I had the good fortune of meeting your husband. One Helluva nice guy.
Yours Truly, Dave Repellent Jr.
Founded in 1983, The Repellents ambushed the unsuspecting Indianapolis/Cincinnati music scene with its brand of fast, loud, straight-edged hardcore influenced primarily by the Ramones. The Indy scene had several great punk bands around (Zero Boys, Slammies, and others), but The Repellents stood apart by being older, snobbier and appearing more spaced out, and playing much sloppier than any of their counterparts.
Drummer Yukki and Bassist Jakki provided the raw horsepower to drive the monster sound. Lumpy's virtuoso performances were legendary. Dave, the singer ( who was mildly retarded and who suffered from attention deficit syndrome) would frequently fly into a rage for no apparent reason and dive onto patrons table , upsetting both the patrons and their drinks.
Down in hill-jack land, in Newport, Kentucky, The Jockey Club was the center of the Cincinnati underground music scene in those years, and The Repellents quickly found a home there. In the early years of the band, lack of money and drugs kept the quartet from traveling much. The Repellents found a way to play a short tour of Ohio.
The first line-up of The Repellents recorded and released some songs on the master tape, thanks to punk rock maverick Bill " tricksie" Levin. It was well received in the national punk press and fanzine network and even garnered some airplay on college radio stations throughout the United States and Europe. Locally, The Repellents gained notoriety for being the first band to make no apologies for habitually being too drunk to perform well. Legendary disk jockey Handsome Clem Carpenter regularly featured the the Repellents on his weekly punk show, Search and Destroy, on WAIF in Cincinnati.
As members changed and the musical interests of the members evolved, The Repellents moved away from the thrash sound of D.C. toward the metallic appeal of Motorhead. This direction was an appropriate one, as guitarist Lumpy had matured into an accomplished lead player. In their later days, singer Dave Repellent Jr., having completely overcome his initial shyness, put on an extraordinary show by leaping around the stage with a sweaty face while Lumpy displayed his virtuoso guitar work. The Bassist for this line up was the legendary Julie Huffaker ( She lives, Last four (5) digits, etc.) and Eric Stouder ( Ivan ) on drums.
The Repellents had a Reunion show on Aug. 8th at Radio Radio in Indy. It was truly a knock-your-socks off performance. Several people in the audience were stunned (stoned).
The second and third incarnations of The Repellents each produced studio recordings that for a variety of reasons were never released. Fortunately, the master tapes survived the intervening years and they have been digitally re-mastered, now sounding better than ever. These second two tapes, along with the original " Rocker Bob" EP, also digitally remastered, will all soon be available to the public. Stay tuned.
Hey Jakki-just wanted to say, I'm a huge fan of Musical Suicide-saw you guys play back in the 80's in Bloomington and Indy-Tim "Bill Igerent" got in contact with me a year or two ago-he's collecting old Musical Suicide flyers-still have the record Little Fish in the Big SeaHe also gave me some MP3's of that record-I play "War is Bad" all the time! Great stuff! Peace!
Date check for Lumpy.. The Primates did play the "React to Art" video show at Ball State studio center in the fall of 1984... So they were around a little earlier than Lumpy remembers....
Also for that time line, I saw Pee Wee Manslaughter rehearse in fall of 1983 and do shows in late 1983 and early 1984.
Some good friends of mine forwarded me this info. I have helped a little with this event and would love to see some MFT bands playing the show. Contact Julie for more info julie@workonyacht.com

You know who you are, come out and be counted!
Did you spend countless nights at Second Story?
Did you eat at Rockits?
Can you barely remember the 1990s?
Hey Ian get in touch with me while you are in town, it would be great to talk to you even if it's just on the phone.
I sent you a message with my fone number!

Warped Tour was a blast! NOFX, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, and The Ataris all put on good shows. Hadn't slam danced in years before this; I don't remember it being that tiring.
