I think it's funny that Jeb called out my lack of CD when we were roommates at the ballroom. My love of vinyl and detestation of the CD format runs along this line. 1971 - 1976 - a nearly constant stream of music from my dad's record collection esp…

I was at home. At least now we can get down to the real business of promoting Indiana music again.

We've definitely hijacked this thread as instructed by Commander Whybark. I seriously love live music of all flavors, anytime anywhere. I heartily endorse these bands.

No less an authority but Wikipedia says that Mute Math's first album sold 100,000 copies. Is there a band from Indiana who has sold more records than that? Because then I could mention Better Than Ezra, and The Radiators. Rap includes, um, a littl…

Oh man I've been looking in the wrong places for controversy. Someone writes they can't think of "one noteable band to come out of NOLA in the last decade." That's just so fucking wrong. Music in New Orleans is everyday all the time. It is not som…

I'm gonna dip my toe in the water here since my friends have already beat me to it. I will defend Indianapolis. If you know my story, you'll understand when I say that nobody rallies to it's citizens like Indianapolis does. Bloomington is transient…

I can't believe this was really televised. Not even speaking politically, because you know... but the mainstream media just has this deep seated inherent interest in political division. It seems pretty even sided but Barack has the bully pulpit. Ho…

Decrepit post-punk-power-popsters The Lovemeknots (born 1990, died 1995) will be staying up past their bedtimes on Saturday, February 13th to play a reunion show (as they are mandated by Indiana law to do once every five years) at The Vollrath Taver…

About Me
I've left Indianapolis so many times. Yet here I am. It would probably surprise some people to know I was born here in 1971. This town was extraordinarily lame when I was growing up, but I had fun times in the Broad Ripple Food Court, Brand X, and putting on punk rock shows in apartment club houses all over the northside. You could reserve them for free at the time and all kinds of kids would show up.

We also held a free art and music show called Art For the Masses in a park in Geist. We didn't get any permits, just showed up in the park and played music with original paintings leaning up against all the trees. Soon after that I left.

It might surprise people to know that from 1989 until 2005 I didn't live in Indianapolis hardly at all. But I always kept good friendly relations with the people and musicians here. Now I'm settling in and just trying to further the whole thing again with the same attitude. Music is art, and musicians can be artists if they can put everything into it.

My grandfather says that a man who works with his hands is a laborer. A man who works with his head and his hands is a craftsman. A man who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist. I think about that everyday.
What bands are you or have you been in?
Seminal Expulsion, The Blacklisted, Wyld Corndogs, The Gerunds, Sardina, Peg Leg Greg and the Danger Egg, Lessicks Kid, Stranded at the Drive In, Admiral Stereo and the Phantom Third Channel, Bad Planet, Baroo, The Demilos, The New Bugs, Drunken Deacons, So Shay Do, Rabbit Hatch, Ass Mascara, and The Vulgar Boatmen.

I've also backed up some pretty talented songwriters in non-band situations like Tim Rutilli, Blues Man Glen, Joe Ryan, Kenny Pfau, and probably a bunch of others.
What city are you from?
Indianapolis, Bloomington, Chicago, New Orleans
Original Hometown

Your Tonic Ball Memory

Tonic Ball has been one of the highlights of the musical calendar. Just today my favorite barista told me that she knows the holiday is here when Tonic Ball arrives.

It struck me that we probably all have similar feelings and great experiences associated with the benefit for Second Helpings.

Submit your favorite Tonic Ball memories, and maybe we can swing a pair of tickets for the best ones.

Here's mine, names have been changed.

Tonic Ball 2008 was a blast. I have always loved Queen more tha… Continue

Review of Mudkids MKEP

I have been eager to hear The Mudkids follow up to Basementality since 2007 when they contributed a track in support of the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl run. That track had an electric guitar hook contributing to a strong crossover appeal. I would say that crossover appeal is probably the strongest commercial statement I could make about a hip hop act.

The MKEP is intended I think as a teaser to their upcoming release hyped as We Are Dynamic and People Love Us. After purchasing the EP at my fa… Continue

Vaya Con Dios Les Paul

On the passing of Les Paul last week, I asked Vess if he would write a little something for the site. I knew that Les played a pivotal role in Vess' musical development and that there would be no person better to document his influence as a player and innovator on behalf of Indiana music. What follows are his words.

"Last Wednesday Les Paul died. The radio and TV stations said all the predictable facts about Les’ illustrious career as guitar hero, guitar innovator, inventor, and hit maker. To m… Continue

Hey PJ good to hear from ya. I'm back in Bloomington. I have a small project studio north of town. How about you, still in Chicago?

Hey, I have no problem with donating tapes. Looking through the sardina archive, I would be surprised if you didn't have what I have on the tape. I'll give the archives a thorough listen; listen to and label my tapes and send off whatever is not represented. Some of the basement stuff is mystery music but I may be able to identify, if not, you guys probably know who is playing. Sounds like a plan!

Hey PJ, I tried to write you earlier but this site took a dump. I have a sardina tape that Jeb either gave me or loaned to me and I dubbed. its a solid 90 minutes (24 songs) of live and studio recordings. I remember jeb told me he mixed some of them. i think all the live stuff is from second story. I have a vinyl single with "starving lovers" and "in april". I also have admiral stereo "smokin at rob's"; A tape labeled PJ that has some of your fifty states songs (unfortunately kansas is not on there and I recorded over some of them...don't use drugs) I also have a master of shine's bluebird show that has two Bolgani songs from their soundcheck, A DAT shine studio master, I have "house" music with your Juno, greg, jeb, etc. "basement" music with fin svingly, the spurgeon and company; lots of delicious avocado (jeb mix). I have some brando tapes that may have met the same fate as PJ (don't use drugs). I have some kadath too, back when simon played bass. I don't think I have jebfest kadath though.
It might be a little while before I can convert this stuff to digital. I have to acquire a larger flash drive and my neighbor Doug has to be bribed to give me a hand. All in all, I have a nice little stash here and would be more than happy to post all to the site when i sort it all out. Sorry about the Katrina thing. I asked Poseidon to spare you but I guess I didn't sacrifice enough chickens and cows. He's not returning my calls anyway. He's a frumpy bloke.
How's them apples??

Hey you old coot. I was trying to pirate sardina songs when I came across this site. I still have old tapes of your music. Hope you are well. You have always been a damn good songwriter. Can't wait to hear the new stuff! Peace!

Also, I have been told that Grit is going to do 22 songs with the band and 5 songs solo vocals and acoustic. FYI do not miss Grit, if possible.

PJ, Grit will be represented by Brad Smith, Steve Tague, Todd Kennedy, Matt Speake and Will Sibley. (Marty took Will's place when he joined Modern Vending)

That's an interesting story. I had another buddy of mine who was caught in Katrina, but he was able to save most or all of his gear. I'm sure the 2 or 3 piece laminate body became swollen and disjoined to some degree and the seam. This will be your Katrina guitar now, bound to have that swamp mojo.

Hi PJ: In regards to question on your guitar.

PJ If the neck is warped or damaged you will need to replace it. The playability is the most critical feature to your guitar and the beginning pathway to great tone. I love the Warmoth necks. Super high quality, great woods and a huge array of neck and fret choices. You can spend hours on just this decision alone. I have both vintage, compound radius and 9.5 necks on my guitars. Once you get this in place, get a great setup on the guitar, either yourself or your local guitar luthier. This may be the end of the process for you. If the guitar plays great and the tone is there you’re done. You want to look for a natural resonance in the guitar itself before ever plugging it in. Don’t invest too much in a guitar that doesn’t have these fundamentals. Pluck the B string and grab the guitar near the rear strap holder button and see if you get a good strong string vibration through the guitar. This can vary wildly from guitar to guitar. If the playability is there, but the sonic output of the guitar is not, look at some replacement pickups and or a complete replacement of the electronic system: volume and tone pots, switch etc. I have had a couple `97 – 00 USA Standard Strats and have not been satisfied with the pickups. I like Jason Lollar’s, Lindy Fralin’s Rio Grandes and the Seymour Duncan’s AlNiCo reissues are also pretty decent. There are many, many different choices from a pure vintage to reverse wound/reverse polarity to eliminate 60 Hz cycle “hum”. The Lollar pickups are/were my favs, but I have to tell you I really like Fender’s new pickups the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups with S1 switching (series and parallel). I cannot believe how great these pickups are. I was sort of a purist for vintage tone including the 60 hz hum, but I consider these pickups tone gaining. I love them. These are on my newest 2005 Fender Stratocaster Deluxe in Honey Blonde. I like Fender’s Texas Specials too, so I would keep that in mind as well. Without getting into an amp discussion on getting better tone, is to have a very high quality guitar cable. Your guitar cable has capacitance and can diminish some mid and highs similar to what your tone pot does on your guitar and amp.
