Tangential update: When we started talking about this, the existence of outsider-identified "isolate" communities was one of the interesting threads that point beyond the specific story of the Ben Ishmaels. The March 1, 2010 issue of the New Yorke…

I am but a messenger. It looks like an impressionistic chronicle of how he came to pursue the creative identity of Ishi Ishmael, as far as I can tell.

So you're saying this guy's some sort of neo-Dadaist? Heh heh...

UPDATE: Ishi Ishmael just dropped a note to me, which I provide here: "Dear Mike, Seeing that you have invoked my name, I'll give you a little from my notebooks. "From Illinois and Indiana came a later myth Of all the people in the world at Howde…

About Me
Second wave old-timer (1983-1986ish) from the Broad Ripple punk scene, plus I hung out in Bloomington some in the same years. Moved to Chicago in the fall of 1985 and got into weird(er), noisy(er) music. Then in 1996 I moved to Seattle, where there's a mini-tribe of Hoosier escapees holding out in the green, soggy wilds.

The Life and Times of Shecky Pitts

This started out as my "About Me" babble, which really was just excessive. So I moved it here. So there.

Born at Methodist Hospital on Hiroshima Day. Grew up at various points around Indy -- the Butler area, Fall Creek, 52nd & College.... After a torturous stint at Brebeuf I escaped to Broad Ripple HS, where I did dorky shit like theater and the weekly (!) newspaper. Long 'bout then I started hearing about this "punk rock" stuff and seeing Zero Boys graffiti on a retaining wall at the clean… Continue
