Yes, I'm aware of the gravestone stories but have not seen any evidence that they mark the graves of the Ishmaelites who were so well documented in McCullough's notes. I have Ishi's CD for review and have really enjoyed it. I am working on a review…

Fascinating, Elsa. You seem to have published just weeks before we started talking about this in detail here. I'm not sure you'll want to plow though our archives, but it's pretty interesting - we more-or-less got to consensus on the Ishmaelites as…

Sorry I am just now finding this group. Maybe you can find some answers in my research on the Tribe published in 2008: Kramer, Elsa F. Recasting the Tribe of Ishmael: The Role of Indianapolis's Nineteenth-Century Poor in Twentieth-Century Eugenics.…

Spent my formative years in Indiana (Indy and Bloomington), lived in B'ton in 1981, then from '84-'89. Lived several years in the Allen Building when it was a ghetto and remember more Bloomington musical history than I'd like to admit. I now live in Austin, Texas

This is pretty huge and historic. I won't be able to make it but if anyone on the site does I'd love to hear a review.

The Your Real Dad Story

As mentioned in the last post, in September of 1983 Dave d'Eath and I found ourselves with a gig at a WQAX Street Dance but no band. We'd been improvising sort of post-punk guitar/bass/vocals stuff, sometimes with the help of tape loops and radio static, and had thought that it'd be interesting to do some of this stuff live, so this gig was the perfect chance. I called Nathan Sturm, at that time still living in the dorms at Ashton, pitched the idea to him and he agreed to play drums.

On the day… Continue

Bloomington Pre-History - Part 2

I neglected to mention in Part 1 of this story that sometime in the fall of '81 someone in the dorm had lent me a mainstream magazine (can't remember which one now) which had a big article, complete with photos, on this new scene in LA called "hardcore". It was a bit sensationalistic and focused on the violence but it fascinated me. I read the article three or four times, gleaning info on bands I'd never heard of like X and the Germs. I later started connecting the dots and realized that I actua… Continue

Bloomington Pre-History (sorta)

I thought I'd take a break before doing the final Too Cool saga entry, and inspired by Steve B's "Pre-Bloomington" blog would post something about the days leading up to punk rock followed by the story of Your Real Dad.

I don't really remember exactly when I heard the term "punk rock" but I was a very avid reader of Creem and watched the few music TV shows we had in the 70s pretty religiously so my guess is it could've been as early as '76. Back then though I had no context to put it in, but I… Continue

Hey,
I just read the Second Story Memories blog from a year or two back and saw your post asking about the "hippie dance" with antlers during UR night or something. I have to confess to being a part of that debacle. PJ Christie had organized a little impromptu song and dance with different lyrics for the guys and girls. Unfortunately, he gave the guys lines to the girls and vice versa. When it started, everyone clung to the back of the stage. I had to herd them onto the stage and by the time everyone was out the song was half over. I just remember the song going "La la la, La la la" etc. Some woman recorded video and audio, so there may be copy in a vault somewhere. I just wanted to thank you for reminding me of one of my "finer" moments on stage. Peace!

I suppose that, having an interest in "The House of Blue Lights and Hoosier hauntings in general", you're probably already familiar with this site, but just in case:

Hey,
I officially moved my Illinois Stones thread to the Carmichael Blog. Didn't seem right to hijack Indiana Musical history for it. I will notify Commander Whybark.

Hey Stephen,
How is Texas treating you these days? It's very cold in Indy and heat aint cheap. Lots of long lost folks on MFT. It's almost like a cool version of a highschool reunion.

Cheers,

I'm all for MFT and the artists both making some money whether it's NP or not. I'm glad there is another way of getting us out there. If I would have sold an album in the 80s, I remember most little labels and artists would be happy to sell their t…

PJ- I thought of that too! I could use a new Ping hat. We aren't too far down the road of the NP thing to turn back. But John is right, if we can find a way to funnel money to artists then I'm all about having MFT make some of that transaction. It…
