This group, named for its spiritual founders is to discuss the ephemera of Hoosier folklore. The entire historical, musical, cultural, and folkloric expanse of the Hoosier state is our stomping ground here.

We (The Victor Mourning) will be coming up from Texas and playing with Accordions on Sat, March 27 for a Blue Stone Folk School show at Noble Coffee & Tea in Noblesville. Looking forward to it.

In one of the posts above or on the other thread(s) on this subject we dismissed the claim that James Whitcomb Riley's poem "Little Orphant Annie" was based on an "Ishmaeli" that came to live with his family. Interestingly enough, this issue has now…

I'd extend this idea to media in general. I, too, was searching high and low for obscure musical gems back in those days, but I was also doing the same with film, books, etc. A friend of mine got a pirated copies of Eraserhead and Pink Flamingos way…

The Your Real Dad Story

As mentioned in the last post, in September of 1983 Dave d'Eath and I found ourselves with a gig at a WQAX Street Dance but no band. We'd been improvising sort of post-punk guitar/bass/vocals stuff, sometimes with the help of tape loops and radio static, and had thought that it'd be interesting to do some of this stuff live, so this gig was the perfect chance. I called Nathan Sturm, at that time still living in the dorms at Ashton, pitched the idea to him and he agreed to play drums.

On the day… Continue

Bloomington Pre-History - Part 2

I neglected to mention in Part 1 of this story that sometime in the fall of '81 someone in the dorm had lent me a mainstream magazine (can't remember which one now) which had a big article, complete with photos, on this new scene in LA called "hardcore". It was a bit sensationalistic and focused on the violence but it fascinated me. I read the article three or four times, gleaning info on bands I'd never heard of like X and the Germs. I later started connecting the dots and realized that I actua… Continue

Bloomington Pre-History (sorta)

I thought I'd take a break before doing the final Too Cool saga entry, and inspired by Steve B's "Pre-Bloomington" blog would post something about the days leading up to punk rock followed by the story of Your Real Dad.

I don't really remember exactly when I heard the term "punk rock" but I was a very avid reader of Creem and watched the few music TV shows we had in the 70s pretty religiously so my guess is it could've been as early as '76. Back then though I had no context to put it in, but I… Continue

Hey,
I officially moved my Illinois Stones thread to the Carmichael Blog. Didn't seem right to hijack Indiana Musical history for it. I will notify Commander Whybark.

Hey Stephen,
How is Texas treating you these days? It's very cold in Indy and heat aint cheap. Lots of long lost folks on MFT. It's almost like a cool version of a highschool reunion.

Cheers,

Hmmm. I can tell you what the news is, but I should probably do it offline.

Okay, here's the thing. If Crowder is as big a Luddite as he claims, why is he sending us emails? Shouldn't his messages be coming strapped to the leg of a carrier pigeon, or something?

Yes, indeed it is (or was) Tommy Cisco.
I remember the shows well. Tommy had acne and a pencil thin mustache,
He gave the appearance of a drowned rat.
His speaking voice was a cigarette scarred rasp.
I was stopping in the local dive The Union Jack and listening to the second rate country band when out of blue a beautiful honky tonk version of "A Ticket To Ride" floated out, sung with a hillbilly accent ("Ah thank Ah'm gonna be sad...").
WTF was that? I wondered. "That" was Tommy Cisco.
I came back for more.....he was a great singer, the best local C & W singer I'd ever seen.
I talked to him a couple of times, he told me how he played bass once at a Chuck Berry ("An asshole," he muttered) gig.
A great talent with no idea of what to do with it.
Thanks for the name!

Yeah, of course there are other tastemakers - I vaguely mention that we all have our own filtering mechanisms and that will continue. Social networking and blogs will become more and more important - as will ways of communicating that we can't conce…

Hey John, since you are the only person I know who would know: Are the models that drive satellite radio producing any revenue for the artist? You don't mention satellite services but to me, not having one, it seems to be a logical evolution to bet…

I predict that labels may not go away, but they will become less important--as will traditional broadcast radio. Ten years from now we will all have internet-based radio in our cars. And the taste-maker-gate-keepers may not all be labels. They might…
