I must say that I'm not the person to write of General Bob. I did not know him well enough. He was however a closer friend to Jeff Holiday a long time and current friend who I shared an Apartment with on Queen St. Many of you will recall the Rock that that house could not contain!
The Apartment wasn't much Two tiny bedrooms a living room slash/kitchen and through the spacious : "Rock Room" was our sumptuous bathroom. I recall soaking my alcohol sodden liver there many an afternoon.
Jeff was fr… Continue

Writing about my development should naturally include interactions with others. Unfortunately I don’t feel it’s my job to expose the weaknesses or the changes that others went through. I’ll try to speak anonymously when I can and not to concentrate on their negativities.
After all they may want to speak of such on their own..
While in early middle school I spent much time in hospital trying to diagnose chronic nausea and abdominal pains etc. With this and ‘accidents’ I managed to spend every ma… Continue

If you want to get a better idea of who I am and where I live you can look at a smattering of images that I have on Picasa. I think that pretty much covers most of the elements I call home.
Now this isn't mandatory kids so don't hurt yourselves fumbling for the link.

In an attempt to actually gather some funds and pay some bills we are trying out some advertising on MFT. I tried Ad Brite but wasn't happy with the ads or the results. We are now trying BlogAds on a good friend's recommendation and hope that this will bring quality ads and revenue to the site. Bottom line is that we need to start getting some kind of income from this project in order to fund the additional development we have planned.
So I wanted to let everyone know that we will be experiment… Continue

Reaction/Mod-X guitarist Ron Synovitz (or Syno as Linda B. would call him) sparked a memory in a recent letter. He mentioned a "hippy" friend of Mitch Straeffer named "Bob." I have select memories of a guy who was nicknamed "General" Bob... a warbly voiced guy with kinda long "Blues Magoos" hair and glasses that looked like they were cut from the bottom of Coca-Cola bottles they were so thick... Kinda gave him large "owl" eyes...
Mitch hung out with "General" Bob and, from all accounts, the "Ge… Continue

Our buddy Robert Meitus, a member of MFT and a long standing member of the Indiana music scene, was recently featured in the Indianapolis Business Journal. The article details his musical past and how he got into entertainment law. I have been in regular discussions with Robert concerning some different projects and I can vouch that he is a great guy with a sharp mind for the entertainment industry. Looks like he is looking to expand his practice...paging Mr. Strohm!… Continue
I stopped by the DAV thrift store in the Irvington Plaza, just a wee bit East of Arlington on Washington, earlier today. About 10 years ago or so this was the best place to find LPs; I found stuff like 13th Floor Elevators and rare Jazz and odd German pressings of 70s prog records, all for .45 cents and would find great stuff at least twice a week.
It has been dead for quite a while and I never stop anymore. Maybe a year ago I found a nice mono copy of the first Fugs LP and a month back I found… Continue

My years cooking at Leslie's taught me something; sometimes working in food service sucks. The work can be frantic as hell. The breaks are erratic, if you even get one. The pay is lousy. The hours are shit, and the customers are sometimes jerks. When you get the right co-workers however, it can be a lot of fun. If you were to ask me what the best part about owning a business is,… Continue
I meant to talk about Dow Jones and the Industrials in this post, but in the process of trying to provide more context, the thing just got too damn long, so I'm chopping it into two. Next time I'm definitely getting to D J & I. Really.

Gulcher Records is releasing the Gynecologists CD, and is using the liner notes I wrote.
Or at least a version of them: here is the original in all of it's glory.
Of all the sick and sordid sagas to come floating out of the punk rock scene in isolated Indiana, none are more twisted than the ravings of Tommy Afterbirth and the band he founded in the late 1970's, the legendary Gynecologists.
This infamous band was the diseased brain child of their lead vocalist, a shambling hulk who had renamed hi… Continue
Is the music that influenced us as we grew up really something to be embarrassed about? I think not. As long as we continue to grow and explore the variety that there is out there.
I doubt that my story is much different than most others.
I think at the age of five I began recognizing the effect of music. At church on Sunday mornings it put me right to sleep.(at best)
Listening to the 1964-65 AM radio on the way to Kindergarten in my mother’s Pontiac Bonneville two songs remain outstanding; Luc… Continue

Just wanted to drop a quick blog to let people know that we'll be opening for Dianogah tomorrow night (6/28) at the Pour haus here in Louisville (1481 South Shelby Street Louisville, Kentucky 40217). Freda returned from her macrobiotic retreat shortly before Hideout's release. She’d adopted a macrobiotic diet, and she taught Jake how to follow the principles of the diet as well – including not eating any dairy whatsoever. They drank so much carrot juice that they turned a weird orange color. Freda felt excited to return to the band, which was a little unfortunate because Pat was fully integrated into Antenna. There was nothing wrong with Pat’s drumming or personality, and I felt lousy and a… Continue
I want to write about some of the bands I've been close to over the years, the vast majority of them from either Muncie or Bloomington. There are a lot of people on this site who did stuff that is essential to my life. But, before I dive in, a prelude . . .
I have always been a radio nut. I used to listen to a little transistor model constantly when I was a kid, oblivious to the music that was played. I wasn’t looking for musical satisfaction, I was looking for a window to somewhere e…Continue

Indianapolis Indians day game
Wednesday, June 3, 2008
My flight back from Washington D.C. circled around the city and I had a birds-eye view of Victory Field, including the lit scoreboard. I took that as a sign that I should attend the day game instead of unpack or heaven forbid, go to work. I had a feeling that I’d find my dad and his buddies there and I did. As Dad and his group yelled “Nora,” I heard my name being shouted from another direction. Typically when I hear the n… Continue

The first live show we performed has become a part of Hoosier lore.
Most of what you've heard is true.
Most of what you've heard is false.
We were booked to play at Third Base with The Retarded Gods, Dow Jones And The Industrials and several other bands not important enough to be remembered.
We decided to play our "hit" and our "Hit" only.
We would play it until we were physically stopped.
We would start a aural revolution with repercussions that are felt to this day.

Stasia Demos once was known as a member of popular Americana band Middletown and as the star of a 1999 magazine ad campaign for Martin guitars.
Middletown called it quits a few years ago, and the ad campaign was a happy accident triggered by a satisfied-customer letter Demos sent to Martin headquarters.
Recently, the 33-year-old singer-guitarist-accordion player has focused on family life with her husband, Matt Mills, and 3-year-old son Silas, not to mention her career as an attorney.

Call it a draw in the battle between Margot & the Nuclear So and So's and the band's major-label bosses at Epic Records.
In October, each party will see the release of an album they prefer. It's "Animal!" for the band, and it's "Not Animal" for the label.
While we wait, a live mini-album titled the "Daytrotter EP" will be released in July.
Read more about all three projects here. Continue

The Cheeses From France are one of those Indy bands that are known by some heard by few and frankly liked by virtually no one.
We played infrequently ( by request) were physically attacked on stage during our first show and never recorded or released a proper album.

Where to begin?

Some of my best-defined memories of events early in my tenure as resident drink slinger at Bullwinkle's and Second Story involve puke. Rightly so, I suppose: in my years on the floor and behind the bar, I saw such quantities of alcohol go down the respective hatches of you people, I'm frankly surprised there are so many of you alive today. Although the career I have ultimately chosen for myself will carry me blissfully to the end of this life, I have to say that getting you people drunk was prob… Continue
I just posted a discussion topic on the group "why aren't you listening to top 40?" and I wanted to post something here to see what comes up...
I am not so much a fan anymore of the latest top 40, but during my childhood and teen years my ear totally became trained to song formula, and what made a good hook. In other words there were just certain songs that I just wanted to play over and over. I mentioned in the discussion, that there's something about the groove, the harmony etc. of a "good" s… Continue
Since these blogs seem to be kinda popular I'll try to add to them from time to time.
Yesterday I worked on a Geico commercial with the caveman and tennis legend Billie Jean King.
Look closely in the crowd behind the umpire and you may spot my sunburned visage.
The caveman wears a hair shirt under his clothes and they darken the hair on his legs with charcoal powder.
And all this time I just thought he was Armenian!!
It was a very laid back affair,The caveman seems to be more popular than I… Continue
I know this has nothing to do with music but I have always been a big fan of Tim Russert. Being a political news junkie I have watched him almost every Sunday morning for the last few years. I won't ever forget staying up late in 2000 watching Tim with whiteboards showing how the numbers added up for Bush and Gore. I always had the feeling he was one of the few totally legit guys out there, I really respected him, can't say that about a lot of people in the news business. Bummer.… Continue

Before we had children I used to do this thing called Recording... I have all these songs that are trapped on cassette. Jan's been so kind to have lavished me over the past 10 years with all this great equipment, but it's like puzzle pieces to me. I can't seem to put them all together to make music with them.

Art is where would-be philosophers hide (from questions, lack of proof, logic, truths, etc.). ”Art” allows scientific minds to express their views without the nuisance of proving their veracity (its where objective thinkers hide behind the guise of subjectivism). Maybe Artists are just philosophers who cheat: They propose truth without offering a why or how, beyond a vague…feeling, of sorts. Art’s pedestal is built upon the presump… Continue

I've been listening to the new MMJ album "Evil Urges" non-stop for the last couple days. It's a strange beast, no doubt, but it is quickly burrowing in with it's weird wandering down the lanes of yacht rock, prog and 80s funk. Oh yeah, there are at least 4 other "genres" there but the thing that I'm digging is that over time you stop hearing the style, you just hear the music.
If you want to check it out you can listen to some tracks on their iMeem…Continue

The Singles played one and only one show in West Lafayette at an Armory show... I think it was our 2nd to last show as a band... Robert Brian Smith (Girls Can Touch and/or Snake, Baby!) got us on a bill since he was going to school at Purdue. I remember we had an ice-cold miserable van ride over from Muncie. I don't think vans in the 80's had working heaters! We got there and the time line was all messed up and we ended up getting slotted 4 hours later than we expected.

This started out as my "About Me" babble, which really was just excessive. So I moved it here. So there.
Born at Methodist Hospital on Hiroshima Day. Grew up at various points around Indy -- the Butler area, Fall Creek, 52nd & College.... After a torturous stint at Brebeuf I escaped to Broad Ripple HS, where I did dorky shit like theater and the weekly (!) newspaper. Long 'bout then I started hearing about this "punk rock" stuff and seeing Zero Boys graffiti on a retaining wall at the clean… Continue

There’s nothing worse about being in a band than being cooped up in a van for months with people you can’t stand to be around. It’s just an awful way to live. I can’t remember who proposed adding a second guitarist to the Blake Babies, but I’m inclined to think I did. We had Stephen Bonner joining us on tour, but still the thought of going out as a trio depressed me. I claimed the purpose was to free me up to do more adventurous guitar playing, but actually I wanted another person to diffuse the… Continue
