Lumpy Repellent ( Repellents, Primates, Pizzle, etc.) suffered a massive heart attack last night! Lumpy was taken off life support this evening. R.I.P. Lumpy!

Chris Cruzan is organizing a tribute/memorial for Lumpy in Indianapolis at Birdy's. I will keep all posted here, as soon as I have more info. If you have a band that wants to play, leave me your info and I'll forward it to Chris. Once again, Lumpy was an integral part of the Indiana music scene, played in many bands, was a guitar…

Band of the Month - Otis Gibbs

With his raspy vocals that hint at years spent singing in dimly lit bars, Otis Gibbs drew me in with his soft, intimate melody lines on his new album, Joe Hill’s Ashes. I have to admit, though, I try not to write from a biased perspective, but this is the style of music I absolutely live for. It’s the kind of music that can only be written… Continue

A new album: BLISS

This instrumental body of work is about finding peace in the storm and watching the sun rise on a new day. It also addresses the timeless truth of our need for constant creation (art, music, gardening, children), filtered through the prism of life's events. Some fun experimenting and downright silliness took place during these sessions, while a constant longing for level water saturates the album as a whole. We are all editors of our own lives. Gregg Kendall and Chad Wells helped me out on… Continue

Long Live Record Stores!

Today is National Record Store Day, and Indianapolis is celebrating! If you weren't already savvy to this fairly new, and now international event, it officially began in 2008, when stores, customers, and artists came together to celebrate the contribution of independent record stores to the music and consumer community.

Independent record stores have always provided not just a product, but also an experience.…

I posted this on my Small Box blog but since it references this site and was relevant I am reposting here as well.

Tape Machine Reel To Reel

Music is a common bond for most Small Box employees. Most of us play at least one instrument and if not have strong opinions about those who do. We have an internal project, MusicalFamilyTree.com, that keeps us connected to our music roots.… Continue

A Watery Grave

Sub Pub

Sometime way back in 1992 a co-worker of mine at DialAmerica, a freaky long-haired nipple-ringed Mormon dude named Rob, told me that he and another guy were trying to get band together. Next thing I knew I was in his basement with a mic in my hand. Rob was a drummer; he had a double-bass setup and wasn't afraid to use it. And that's… Continue

Band of the Month - P.O.N.S.

I’ve never conducted an interview over a game of whiffleball until Jacob Gardner and I got together for the P.O.N.S. feature for MFT this month. However, in between PBRs and the occasional swing, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the fact that nothing Jacob does is ever conventional.

We should preface that this is not the P.O.N.S. you’ve heard play a million times… Continue
