I think there's a certain point in most of our lives when the door opens wide, and we realize there's much more to life than we thought. Growing up in this society, it may take some folks a while, but we eventually encounter a much bigger world than life with our parent(s) prepared us for. People react to this in very different ways, and one of the best possible vantage points to see and experience this transition shock is in a large state university.
I wanted to talk some about what… Continue

Here's what is new on the MFT archive (actually there are some great new posts since then but they will have to wait for next week).
is a side project of Jon Rogers (Crafty) of Everything, Now!. As with everything Jon does there is a good deal of genius mixed with insanity dosed with a psychedelic wash of sound.

I've really had a hard time putting this into words. As I've grown older, the frequency in which I see my childhood friends has become significantly less. I have lived back in Indianapolis for 7 years now and had gone the first 6-1/2 of those without seeing Sean, aside from random bumping intos. I do feel fortunate that we were able to hang out a few times within the last few months. Once, he came to see The Slammies play at The Mel, and again at The Zero Boys show at Radio Radio... He also… Continue

While not intended to be a definitive list of the area's "best" guitarists, a story published Sunday in The Star shines a light on Thom Daugherty of the Elms, Michael Kelsey, John Byrne of the Benders, Dino Codalata of Lazarus and Danny Thompson of Bigger Than Elvis.
In a video that accompanies the story, Byrne plays an instrumental version of Sardina's "He's on Drugs Again."

"We get the thing a lot about, 'Why aren't you guys on a label?' or 'Why aren't you guys on the road?' I say, 'I live on your street and you can come see me next weekend'," says Christian Taylor.
America Owns the Moon is back in action as a trio.

Even if you didn’t know LonPaul, I’m sure that you saw him walking around the end south Broad Ripple -- the last few years with his adorable looks-just-like-LP son on his shoulders.
[Matt Sommers photographer]
LonPaul was one of those people that I've known forever, but not sure when I met him. He was a brilliant musician and sound engineer.
I got to see… Continue

I've worked with, played with, been angered by and inspired by LonPaul, but something I will always remember about LP is a good example of the kind of guy he was. Aside from other public projects, I also make music anonymously. No one, not even my close friends know that this musical project is me. I created a myspace page for this musical project, it has been up for a while. I have only received one message to this page...ever. It was from LonPaul referencing one of the songs. His message was… Continue

Thanks and as the kids say BIG UPS to Dr. Holly for sending along a copy of the RFNR DVD.
Zac and I and Holly have mentioned watching it in passing to one another here, but prolly it needs more than a passing chat.
I watched Eric work on the damn thing for five years, checking in on his progress on visits back as I went through a move, a marriage, and a divorce and Eric went through a couple of painful breakups of his own. I had frankly assumed the video was not fated for… Continue

Ok... I saw the blog on Muncie. The No Bar. Big Black, etc. It did get me thinking. At some point I'll dig out that box in the back of the basement that has some of my "Muncie Memorabilia" that surrounds The No-Bar and the bands I was in (primarily The Singles & Reaction) as well as some of the other things that went along with my time I did in Muncie, Indiana.
I went to school at Ball State University from 1980-1985 then stuck around till late Spring of 1987 playing music and… Continue

Abby and I will be in Indy this weekend and are looking forward to seeing all our friends down there. Feel free to get in touch this week if you'll be in town. We don't have anything too specific planned other than to hopefully grill with Frank and Courtney.

It was 1979. I was a pseudo-jaded high school junior, already past my infatuation with the Sex Pistols though still enthralled with punk rock (and indeed would form my first band the Panics next year). In a good-faith attempt to foster understanding between parent & spawn, my father told me he had arranged for the family to go see old time rocker Jerry Lee Lewis at a small club in Brown County called The Little Nashville Opry.
Hmmm, that sounds all right, I thought, a free show and… Continue

Okay, I've posted the tracks I have. I will try and take the time to blog further about a lot of things here, and a bio of the Beatniks is way up there on the list. Anybody by chance remember Zulu Hell? ROFLMFAO. But I just don't have time right now to start on such a trip down memory (blackout?) lane. A few quick notes and comments just on these tracks, though.
In listening to these it's not quite the original tape that some of you may still have.
What Does It Take is obviously… Continue

Like many folks on here, things haven't been the same for me since last week. Since arriving in Indy on Tuesday eve, last night was the only normal night's sleep I've had. Here's the rundown:
Tuesday: tossing and turning, getting up to pee, and night terrors galore. At one point I tripped while jumping out of bed in mid-terror and dove headfirst into the carpet. I have the rug burn to prove it. Glad I have bangs.
Wednesday: Didn't fall asleep until 4:30 a.m. Subjected… Continue

I actually wrote this a few weeks ago.. pressed send and got some sort of error. My first instinct today is to write the whole thing in MS-Word and then copy/paste it over here....
I had spent my senior year trying to figure out what I was going to do with the rest of my life... well.. maybe that's not true.. maybe I just didn't care. I really can't remember what I was thinking. I took a bunch of college level courses during my last year at Carmel. Scored really high on my SATs.. and… Continue
