Help Indianapolis represent the USA in London with YOUR VOTE!!!

We are in the TOP 5 of the Hard Rock "Ambassadors of Rock" national battle of the bands! WE NEED YOUR VOTE!!!

This may be the biggest thing for us yet! We have the chance to play at Hyde Park in London at The Hard Rock Calling Festival with The Killers, The Kooks, Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Making it this far means that we have been chosen out of 150 bands, in over 20 cities in the US, handpicked by judges such as Little Steven Van Zandt of… Continue

Climbing the Tree

I've heard about this site for quite awhile, but hadn't had a chance to really check it out. When I finally sat down and wandered around the site, I was amazed. This is truly a great site and I look forward to re-connecting with y'all. So, just a note to say I will dig through my stuff and post as much as I can. I have a ton of stuff that I haven't seen posted here yet, so please keep checking back or hook up an RSS feed.

A Plea for more Pravada...Indianapolis NEEDS you...

I have no idea where to post this...instead of writing Jesse more long letters on legal pads over whiskey...I will say this. Loved Pravada for years. Manus Plere is absolutely without a doubt the BEST album I have purchased, local or not in a long while. So much talent in this band. Indianapolis needs a show soon. We also need more videos...My favorite songs off the album- One foot in front of the other, Best Friends, and Casey's addition of Tiny Miracles is both beautifully written, and… Continue

ISO Safety Pups

I had 2 tapes of the Safety Pups that I bought from them in 87 and 88. They were cool, and their music opened my mind, causing me to become a lifelong industrial music fan and maker.

Those tapes were stolen in 1990, by some thief who just broke in and grabbed stuff including my bag of favorite things.

But alas, I just found a copy that I had made of most of one of them, and realized that with this internet thing, there is hope of me finding THE Safety Pups, or people who know them, or… Continue

Change to Blogs

I made a change today that I think will help encourage quality content on the site.

Going forward all blogs will be pre-approved and some will be featured on the home page.

If the author thinks their post is quality stuff that the community at large is interested in reading then we will consider featuring the blog on the home page. If the post isn't really intended or written with the community in general in mind then we will simply approve it and it will live on the Blogs… Continue

Jay Bennett ex Wilco passes away

I was really surprised to come across this story this morning. No cause of death is known, passed away in his sleep. I remember meeting him during the AM tour at Second Story. He was brought on as a hired gun if I recall to play the guitar parts since he didn't play on the record. Obviously he went on to have a dramatic impact on the band as well as provide a decent amount of Indie rock gossip fodder from the "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"… Continue

Weekly Profile: Thin Fevers

Jeb has wanted me to start a weekly profile of a select band on MFT. This week its the Thin Fevers.

The Thin Fevers started up in Indianapolis in 2005. Descriptions of post-hardcore, dance rock and aggressive noise. Brian Wyrick (guitars), Antonio Leiriao (vocals), Ben Traub (drums) and Travis Hawkins (bass) describe the band as a "mish-mash of other bands that no one, including local media or fans, could classify what was… Continue

The van "should be ready to roll"

After days and days of alley mechanic work..the van should roll, maybe this week. I still have a large list of van related to -do's... like new rear drums, drum pads, ujoints, oil, radiator, trans cooler line....oh and one more shock to install.

The Hound

Pursuant to Dr. Zink's notice of Miriam Linna's nascent narrative of the Ohio mafia, I found her linking to one Houndblog. The Hound was a key WFMU DJ specializing in older regional sides but years ago he relocated toe NOLA (so I am told) where he owns a bar. Persons who actually live in NOLA and play the rock and/or the roll may have better 411 than I on such matters.

So, like, listen to the… Continue

Musical Importance

Hello.. this is an open-ended blog discussion/editorial.

I was thinking that Musical Family Tree's homepage needs to focus more on the music, events and places we can purchase all the music we listen to on here. I think the community aspect is great, but it's overshadowing the reason this all started.

This isn't to criticize, just to see if anyone shares my sentiments. Bring back more of the music to the front page.

Congrats to Kenny and Terra Childers!

In case you haven't heard Lila Cricket Rose came into the world this week! Kenny Childers, who many of you know and is an active member on MFT, and his wife Terra are proud new parents.

Hopefully Kenny will chime in when things settle down and post some pics.

Landlocked's version of iTunes?

You probably already got the email, but this looks interesting...

If you read Pitchfork, you might have seen a story yesterday about indie stores banding together and launching a digital store. Well its true, now you can buy guilt-free MP3s from us! Don't get us wrong, it still doesn't compare with the physical product - a piece of art that you can hold and read and cherish (and…

My bands

Thunderwear and Bunnyfarts were created from boredom in my grandparents house and access to a drum kit, an electric guitar, a keyboard sampler and a electronic drum pad. Singing about our lives and cleaning products, We strive to make silly nonsensical songs that people will get a smile or even a laugh at.

our recordings are located here

tell me what you think (keep in mind that this purely a comical… Continue

Miriam's Story of the Cramps

Miriam, the first Cramps drummer, is blogging about the early days of the band:

Everyone I knew in the 80's Bloomington scene loved the Cramps. For fans, casual or otherwise, this is a fun read. And those early pictures of Poison Ivy are priceless.
