Prelude 2: The College Years

I meant to talk about Dow Jones and the Industrials in this post, but in the process of trying to provide more context, the thing just got too damn long, so I'm chopping it into two. Next time I'm definitely getting to D J & I. Really.

When you’re a sheltered kid with a healthy curiosity stuck in middle of Indiana, you always get the feeling that everything happens somewhere else. When you get to a midwestern college, you have plenty of coastal/big city compatriots… Continue

The Gynecologists - Original Liner Notes

Gulcher Records is releasing the Gynecologists CD, and is using the liner notes I wrote.

Or at least a version of them: here is the original in all of it's glory.

Of all the sick and sordid sagas to come floating out of the punk rock scene in isolated Indiana, none are more twisted than the ravings of Tommy Afterbirth and the band he founded in the late 1970's, the legendary Gynecologists.

This infamous band was the diseased brain child of their lead vocalist, a shambling hulk… Continue

Just got this e-mail from Gulcher today:

The Gynecologists 1981-1994

(Gulcher 432)

Of all the sick and sordid sagas to come floating out of the punk rock scene in isolated Indiana, none are more twisted than the ravings of Tommy Afterbirth and the band he founded in the late 1970s, the legendary Gynecologists. Tommy learned to love the seedy underbelly of pop culture at his father's drive-in movie theater, in the… Continue

Classifieds Added to the Site!

We created a forum where MFTers can post stuff they want to buy or sell, jobs they are seeking or employment opportunities. Also, feel free to post services that your company has to offer (I just did!). We can't police or guarantee transactions so everyone needs to do their own due diligence.

Here's the Classified's Forum!

Dianogah in Louisville this Saturday

Just wanted to drop a quick blog to let people know that we'll be opening for Dianogah tomorrow night (6/28) at the Pour haus here in Louisville (1481 South Shelby Street Louisville, Kentucky 40217). I believe that this is as close as Dianogah is going to make it to Indy on this tour and I thought some people might want to catch them. They'll also be doing an in-store at Ear X-tacy early that afternoon at 5 pm.

Prelude: Before I Went Local

I want to write about some of the bands I've been close to over the years, the vast majority of them from either Muncie or Bloomington. There are a lot of people on this site who did stuff that is essential to my life. But, before I dive in, a prelude . . .

I have always been a radio nut. I used to listen to a little transistor model constantly when I was a kid, oblivious to the music that was played. I wasn’t looking for musical satisfaction, I was looking for a window to… Continue

S.P.F.C.C.M.T., dig?

I gotta say it.

George Carlin? Bigger loss than Tim Russert. Better-spoken motherfucker, too. But, as George pointed out, mayflies live ony one day. Sometimes it rains.

This old MetaFilter post might help with the appreciation… Continue

Everthus the Deadbeats | A Dazzling New Band Delivers a Diamond

There is a great article/review of Everthus the Deadbeats new album, John Kill and the Microscopic Lullaby by Kevin Renick on the Playback website:

This is an excellently written review of an amazingly creative album by one of Indy's best bands. Here is the text of that article:

Indianapolis Indians day game

Wednesday, June 3, 2008

My flight back from Washington D.C. circled around the city and I had a birds-eye view of Victory Field, including the lit scoreboard. I took that as a sign that I should attend the day game instead of unpack or heaven forbid, go to work. I had a feeling that I’d find my dad and his buddies there and I did. As Dad and his group yelled “Nora,” I heard my name being shouted from another direction.… Continue

The Cheeses From France - A Dark History With a Semi Soft Creamy Center. Pt 2

The first live show we performed has become a part of Hoosier lore.

Most of what you've heard is true.

Most of what you've heard is false.

We were booked to play at Third Base with The Retarded Gods, Dow Jones And The Industrials and several other bands not important enough to be remembered.

We decided to play our "hit" and our "Hit" only.

We would play it until we were physically stopped.

We would start a aural revolution with… Continue

Catching up with Stasia Demos

Stasia Demos once was known as a member of popular Americana band Middletown and as the star of a 1999 magazine ad campaign for Martin guitars.

Middletown called it quits a few years ago, and the ad campaign was a happy accident triggered by a satisfied-customer letter Demos sent to Martin headquarters.

Recently, the 33-year-old singer-guitarist-accordion player has focused on family life with her husband, Matt Mills, and 3-year-old son Silas, not to mention her career as… Continue
