Fatalistic Funnies Included in Mega-Mini Comics Anthology

While I was an art student in Bloomington, I spent some of my time making mini-comix under the label, Fatalistic Funnies. Mini-comics were 8-page comic books (sometimes called 'newave' mini-comics) made from a single, double-sided 8.5x11 sheet, usually traded for other mini-comics in the mail (they fit perfectly in a regular envelope). The main place for finding out about them was in Factsheet 5, a zine which reviewed basically everything anyone sent it, and which was… Continue

The two were threatened with a pocket knife by "'a… Continue

Cory Doctorow on Dumpster Diving

Cory Doctorow at BoingBoing:

"Dumpster Diving: The World's Most Recession-Proof Job" (Feb.2, 2009)

The piece begins: "Last December, Forbes published my latest article on Darren Atkinson, hands down the most exciting, thoughtful and skilled garbologist and dumpster diver I've ever heard of. Ishkur's Guide to Electronica

A friend sent me a link to this site, and I haven't had much time to explore it, but a mutual friend said it's loads of fun--it shows historical connections and streams of influence...

And, as far as I can tell, "electronic music" in this case = electronica, not Morton Subotnik... but I could be wrong. Once I start exploring, we'll see!… Continue

Classic Doc Martens discontinued...? (end 2008)

To anyone who loves Doc Martens—I think the company is discontinuing some of their classic lines of shoes.

I can't vouch for this 100% but

1.) when I went to a store to get new ones, they said they were sold out of the old models and weren't getting any replacements.

2.) the classic models seem to be on sale everywhere online (more about that later)

3.) some web pages are specifically listing them as discontinued.

The collage… Continue

New York Times Books Article Starts in Bton (Dec 2008)

A recent article on differences in opinion on books begins with a new Bloomington resident:

JOCELYN BOWIE was thrilled by the invitation to join a book group. She had just returned to her hometown, Bloomington, Ind., to take an administration job at Indiana University, and thought she had won a ticket to a top echelon. “I was hoping to network with all these women in upper-level jobs at I.U., then I found they were in the book group,” she said. “I thought, ‘Great! They’ll see how… Continue
