Just what will we call this soon to be passing decade? The "Os"? Like O-9? That's what I usually call it- "back in O-6...."

So with the decade closing out I wanted to send out a request for Best Albums of the Decade. I realize just trying to think of that might give you a headache, but just start by listing any that come to mind, it doesn't have to be a top ten list or anything like that. Here's some of mine and I will add some later.

as you may note, this list is decidedly "Indie" rock.

TV On The Radio- "Return To Cookie Mountain"and "Dear Science"- a fascinating band that is really pushing boundaries without forgetting to rock, an American Radiohead if you will.
The National "Boxer"- an album with surprising depth despite sounding very one dimensional at first. They were channeling something with this one.
Deerhunter- "Microcastle"- what pop music should be in the "Os" if the radio stations played anything worth listening to. This band was my favorite discovery of the past 2 years. Check out the sister band Atlas Sound as well.
The Shins- "Wincing The Night Away"- this album didn't get as much love as "Chutes Too Narrow" but in my book it has much more depth and finds it way to my turntable twice as often.
Yo La Tengo- "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out"- this album just barely made the decade but it deserves to be on this list. It took me a while to get into it but I now see it as the band's high water mark and probably the best album made by a married couple around the theme of their relationship.
Amy Winehouse "Back To Black"- a classic despite the hype
Dirty Projectors- "Bitte Orca"- I usually don't go for "weird" stuff like this but this is such a great record I really had to add it to the list.
Spoon- "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"- really changed how I think about recording
Sufjan Stevens- "Illinois"- a masterpiece all around
Bright Eyes- "I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning"- emo grows up and writes great songs.
Radiohead- "Hail To The Thief" and "In Rainbows"- they were really the band of the decade in my eyes
Fleet Foxes- "Fleet Foxes"- I think this album will endure and grow in respect over time, timeless stuff.
The Strokes- "Is This It"- an undeniable classic, every song should have been a hit.
Of Montreal- "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" - This is probably my favorite record from the decade at this point.

I'm not crazy about Michael Jackson or modern-day indie rock, but I will sing the SHIT out of some prime Manilow.

ahhhh Bullet Lavolta, their 1st 12" almost bordered on being the new Jerry`s Kids !!! Then they hit the UK with the Lemonheads & they both fell away.....those were the days lol
What gets me is people forget that punk/hardcore was NOT a private party for the Britain,USA & Canada.....the rest of the world turned out some great bands, watch out soon for my none Britain,USA & Canada top 10 list.

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR: I'll sing along with Mandy in a heartbeat, in the most hetero of stylings, of course - look for it on YouTube after my next holiday karaoke session...

John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of things a person can do while typing to let someone know you're goofing (harmlessly) on them when it's not so clear by the words you type-the first being: "Just Kidding"---otherwise it comes off as opprobrious. Coming out of that '80's do it yourself, burn your idols, don't keep your mouth shut culture (that you so easily dismiss), I would have thought it would have occurred to you that one or more of us wouldn't have stood by and let it happen for too long. One good jab deserves another-or three.
I just can't wait for the day I'm driving along and pull up to a red light, and upon hearing the driver next to me belting out the words to "Mandy", I look over to see Kurt singing gaily along with Barry Manilow. It'll be up on youtube faster than you can say "Bullet Lavolta"---One day...mark my words.

John I will indeed buy you a drink but you will first have to drive the van of screaming kids northward!

Dude, I already like you! Both through your entertaining prose on this site and by your association with people for whom I have unwaivering fondness. And we share a love for that crazy Southern Indiana town, though for me it's getting pretty abstract as I have a tougher and tougher time finding a reason to make the 8-hour drive with a vanload of screaming kids.

Im 6`3" sideways lol.... just remember your dealing with another culture on here with the "ribbing" when im around & maybe im someone who loves his punk music enough to defend it !!!! My CV includes doing a tape label, video label &10 years of punk photography which has been used on various records & in fact there is a book out now including plenty of my work. In fact ive been going to Hardcore/punk shows since 1978 & have seen rather alot of bands. Anyway Mr Strohm, one day we will cross paths & im sure you might actually get to like me !! Till then.....im going to plug the book....

p.s., the Internet is funny. And no, I don't think I'm above people. Except in terms of height, which at 6'3" I fuckin' well am above most people. Yeah, I suppose I can live with it ;)

Jeb, obviously I've succeeded at stirring the pot, huh? I'll let you buy me a drink next time I'm in Indy (assuming there's not a contract out on me). If I haven't said it enough times before, I love certain hardcore records (including TSOL and every artist I mentioned on this thread). Certainly didn't mean to make life-long enemies from a little (intended) good-natured ribbing. My bad press has spilled over to other social networking portals! (Someone ought to invent a computer keyboard with special keys for things like "good-natured ribbing" and "irony," stuff like that). Meanwhile, I'm legal counsel for some of the biggest punk labels and artists. How's that for irony? I was playing (lame) HC in the early 80s and I'm still professionally involved with the music. And fuck yeah, Sea Change is genius, corporate shill or not (another thread, probably already long played out in these pages).

Here doggy!

I'm all for MFT and the artists both making some money whether it's NP or not. I'm glad there is another way of getting us out there. If I would have sold an album in the 80s, I remember most little labels and artists would be happy to sell their t…

PJ- I thought of that too! I could use a new Ping hat. We aren't too far down the road of the NP thing to turn back. But John is right, if we can find a way to funnel money to artists then I'm all about having MFT make some of that transaction. It…
