Andy "The Brit"

#1....WHY BLOOMINGTON ? (1986 & the first crossing of paths with Simon Trolley)

1986
I had reached a period in my life where i needed something different in my life. The 80`s was a VERY violent period of time in British social behaviour. English Soccer games had a major hooligan problem & it was just about showing up everywhere else also. It was a period where you just did not go to a Punk show without seeing at least one fight break out ! For anyone who has seen the racial fighting at the start of the CLASH film "RUDE BOY",that was filmed in my area in Digbeth Birmingham outside Digbeth Civic Hall who used to put on most of the big Punk shows in Birmingham. The venue was also used for Boxing events & sometimes you did not know which one you were at ! In the end all this hate around came to the fore with the Miner`s Strikes.

Work sucked (don`t it always) & as much as i tryed to get through the 80`s by doing as many Soccer games & Punk shows as i could,i needed something VERY different to break this set pattern i had fallen into ! I was becoming something i hate...

Me & the first time i grew a moustache, the older ya looked the easier it was to get a drink in a bar !

At this time Punk was going through somewhat of a change & by the mid 80`s i was not on my own in being someone who was checking out American Hardcore ! By 1985-86 we started to get more than Black Flag,DK`s etc hitting our shores as word was getting back to the States that touring bands would get some sought of audience to play too. Soon we were starting to get a new batch of bands touring the UK like Rhythm Pigs/Die Kreuzen/Naked Raygun etc hitting the UK .
In November 1986 another of these "new" batch of bands hit the UK in the form of GOVERNMENT ISSUE from Washington D.C. For a minor fee of $350 they like these other bands would show up in a battered old van & play just about anywhere. At this time this was a whole lot of dreams coming true for me & once G.I. had booked shows in for Coventry "Hand & Heart" & the Birmingham "Mermaid" i was more than willing to go to Coventry on a cold November night rather than wait for the Birmingham show. This would prove to be a desison that would change my life....

Come the night of the show,it was like any other Punk show night. I took with me my sidekick (Karl) who was VERY much on the quiet side, never really opened up until he had a few beers. Also packed was my tape recorder as at that time i used to tape allot of shows i went too & put them out on my none profit tape label to get more people into World Punk/Hardcore. Also took my "tacky" camera for the odd snap. If i wanted to have a "slam",then Karl was always around to watch my recorder while i had some fun ! Anyway we cramned into my yellow mini (car in the film Italian Job) & off we went too Coventry for G.I. at the Hand & Heart.

G.I. at the Hand & Heart in Coventry 1986

Once there it was like any other Punk night, well except for during the night a blond spikey haired Punk who kept catching my eye sight as he kept looking over at me. Anyway between bands he made his move & walked over to me to talk. He had this charming smile across his face which made me wonder if he was a "Shirt Lifter"....English slang for someone who likes men !!! Once he was in range,he said he had been watching me all night to which i replied.... YES !!!! Then he changed my whole way of thinking by explaining himself & explained that he had been looking for someone all night who he felt he could trust. The problem was that he had travelled down from London with a bag & could not find anywhere safe where he could leave it. He wanted my help ! All i could do was suggest that he could put it in the boot of my car to which he said OK ! I was very surprised by this answer as we had only just met & i could have very easily drove off with his bag during the show . As we walked to my car he introduced himself as SIMON (DAVIES/TROLLEY). He came over as a well educated person, something very uncommon in the Punk scene i was used too !

As the night wore on,we became more & more friendly & both had a great time in the "pit". Ha,Simon kind of freaked out about how nuts i was on the dance floor & the fact that i was going crazy in the whole of G.I.`s set. He struggled to get his head round it as i was not on drugs or alcohol (driving at the time!) & yet i smoked like the bomb was about to drop ! I guess my whole body was living off the energy of the musuc & what Simon never saw was me as stiff as a board the next day !!!

What did not come over that night was i had not only made a good friend, but i had made a "major" good samaritan decision that would get me out of the hole i was in & change a large chunk of my life......

Coming soon #2.................

Yeah i remember you (Simon) taking home Banks`s beer in "carry out" containers when you came to stop at my parents. The first pint you ever saw,you stared at it for 10mins before touching it as you had only seen a "head" on beer before in the shape of Guinness ! (Should have had that in the Blog i guess!)
The crust scene was in full swing by then along with the "crossover" scene. Weird times, our scene had got less violent than London, once Digbeth Civic Hall had gone.
Oh i still have the video stuff you done Simon, that 30min Punk comp you had put together for you & the 3hrs of the "all dayer" in Birmingham of Toxic Reasons/HDQ/Bad Dress Sence/KGB/Doom etc
If i remember right,my Mom & Dad had a menu for you to pick from, they always gave people a choice of food Ha,Ha,Ha!

That's "slops" thing supposedly existed in the 19th century in the American frontier west. Amazing that it still existed in the UK that late. I guess it's more proof that early punk really was a sort of "frontier", eh?

I'm still laughing !! Shirt lifter ?!?! I was smiling at you 'cause in this sea of crusties, dread locks, and dogs on strings, there is Andy wearing a bandana round his head, lumber jack shirt tied round his waist, ripped blue jeans, and a bunch of american bands/Leeds football logos tattooed on his arms. At the time, I'd say only a small crew of people were really listening to American punk, with a few bands like The Stupids and Bad Dress Sense, openly copying it. Hanging on the wall of the gig Andy is talking about, was a giant Antisect banner, left up from the night before. Crust was in full swing, and a few months later Napalm Death's "Scum" LP would be released. I used to hitch hike from London up to the midlands, as London's punk scene was incredibly violent then. I could see the same bands up there on the Friday night, that would be playing London on the Saturday. Andy was always cool, and would let me crash on his floor, and his Mum would feed me. Then off to his local pub, before dropping me off again next to the highway. Great times. The Mermaid pub Andy talks of later, used to sell pints poured from the slop tray under the beer taps, for 50p, as a sorta "beer special" for the crustys. Keep it coming Andy. Great stuff.

Stephen.... Some of my friends went to see them on one of their earlier tours (i was not into them at the time) when they played Birmingham with a band called UK DECAY . Everyone said they sucked which stopped me from checking them out for some time until i found out that in fact they had equipment trouble on stage & everyone had judged them by that ! When i said "we started to get more than Black Flag,DK`s etc" i was referring to other bands like G.I.,SCREAM etc & NOT DK`s,BLACK FLAG etc. I do have footage of them playing France from 1981 so i was aware they had been before & the fact i knew people who had seen them with UK DECAY. Also as far as living in the UK,we had TOXIC REASONS doing the same thing for like 10 months where they were playing everywhere & even did a John Peel session. Thanx for the info mate, good to see people are reading....

Hey Andy, you mention the DKs "hitting your shores", but people forget that they actually came into their own in the UK. They were living there when their first album was released on Cherry Red (a UK label) in 1980. And indeed, I first heard of them when I was living in Germany that year, listening to John Peel on the British Forces Broadcasting Service. They went back to California after punk started getting a bit more developed in the US, well, in California at least, and then returned to the UK as this new phenom, but they had already long before paid their UK dues.

He went back and forth if I remember correctly-he'd be at school for a year or 2 and then disappear for a year or 2---funny, because him and I always were into the same music -- even when he'd be gone he'd come back and we'd be listening to the same things. heavy metal - punk rock anyway.

It was just that first meeting Burd,to have a spikey leather jacket haired punk keep looking at ya & then come over & talk to ya with a smile & well educated voice well..... !!! The normal first words were "Have you got 10p? " with a more hostile voice ! Here was a guy called Simon who was such a CHARMER !!!! Hey Burd,if you 2 went to the same school.....How come you don`t sound as "POSH" as Simon Ha,Ha,Ha...
