Musical Family Tree

The Indiana Music Archive and Online Community

First of all, Jeb asked me to start a blog of this type a couple days ago. Well, I already had one similar to it but no one, including myself, was posting. With all of the hullabaloo regarding New Orleans vs Indiana in sports; It was said by one Rachel Maddow that Indianapolis shouldn't try to compete with New Orleans musically after viewing music video's for both teams on her February 2nd show. I posted this fact on the Mix Tape blog soon after and then the peach cobbler hit the fan. There were so many posts another blog began in defense of Indianapolis. We have no reason to be defensive. Hoosiers are who we are musically and are beholden to no man (or news anchor). In the interest of educating ourselves and each other as to what Indiana music consists of, here is the place to do it. Personally, having just turned from kitty cat back to human, would like this to be about old music. However, modern music defines where we have been AND where we are going. Just try to stick to Indiana...and Music.

I haven't read it. But would like to. There are copyright concerns I left on your comment wall and inbox. But yeah, sounds great!

Have you seen the book Indy's Heart of Rock and Roll? It's all about Indianapolis music from the 40s through maybe the early 80s. I have a copy that I can reproduce for you if you like

I'm moderating in thought only.

Yukki- I had a similar experience a couple years ago in downtown South Bend. I was walking to my favorite watering hole when I heard the most amazing Gospel. It sounded like the church scene in Blues Brothers, only better cause I was standing outside the church. The rhythm was relentless and the vocal harmonies were unbelievable.

Jbarge- I hope you don't move on too far, I enjoyed the "yammering" and value the opinions, even if I don't make that immediately clear.

Something I just thought. When I was a kid, my father taught me how to make a flute out of a tree branch. He cut a piece of branch about the thickness of a dime. Then he pushed the center green wood out with the tip of the blade. He then drilled an off center hole along the shaft near the middle. Holding it to his mouth, he blew in this center hole and used his thumbs to cover either side of the flute. He only got like three notes but It was the coolest thing I ever saw at that age. This is back in the 70's when kids carrying knives wasn't a big deal.

When I was a kid growing up in Anderson, Indiana, every once in a while we would hear live music being played in the neighborhood and wander around until we tracked down where it was coming from. Many times I'd lean against a wall and watch some of my black neighbors play funk and soul jams, mostly instrumental. I wish I had tapes of some of that stuff so I could listen back and see if it was a s good as I remember. I guess it doesn't matter. At the time it was so cool, watching those guys play. I think things like that are lost in most neighborhoods nowadays. So impressive and a really fun memory.

Oh I see, it's a couple crossed threads. I'll repost the Hurtt 411 here:

"Michael Hurtt, not sure what high school. He's a bit younger than me so i think he must have graduated high-school around 1986. I think he stayed in town for a bit at Notre Dame before coming to Bloomington in '87 or '88 - he and I were in Modock together in 88-89-90 before he moved to NO from Bton in like '95.

After Modock he and Matt Uhlmann led (and still do, on and off) the Royal Pendletons. He's Memphis/NOLA based these days. I think Matt is full-time New Orleans currently.

I can't remember his brother's name. Anyway just wondered if you'd crossed paths with him."

Michael, great to hear we tickled your fancy. It was exciting times, still will be yet. Didn't I drop some further info on the Hurtts in a followup comment? Oh yeah, I think you are moderating here. Anyway. Great to virtually meet you; I have actually never met Jeb and PJ in person but I feel as though I have. Their crew is my crew, dig?

"Never debate a musician" - that's rich. Thnx fer the compliment vis a vis the Walking Ruins, sometimes a band can really strike a chord.
You'll just have to forgive my insistent yammering - I've actually given lotsa previous thoughts to why states and cities develop scenes, and how they stand in the tribunal of history and so bringing this up was like waving a flag.
But I'll move on, promise. peace out.

Holy Moly,
I just read the Hoagy thread and the monkhaus blogs. Awesome. I'm starting another Blog to address some of the melungeon, Roma material and I think MANY will be interested. My main interest has been Archeology/Geology the past decade so be on the lookout. There were many good comments on geography and culture, I have an anthropolgy minor (If I could have majored I would have finished school) and may take a stab at that too.

No, I didn't get around. My older brother might know them. He's been a drummer ever since I can remember. Is that a band or people.

Here doggy!

I'm all for MFT and the artists both making some money whether it's NP or not. I'm glad there is another way of getting us out there. If I would have sold an album in the 80s, I remember most little labels and artists would be happy to sell their t…

PJ- I thought of that too! I could use a new Ping hat. We aren't too far down the road of the NP thing to turn back. But John is right, if we can find a way to funnel money to artists then I'm all about having MFT make some of that transaction. It…

I tried to watch 100 Ways but I could feel my life force draining. Haven't the Japanese made some horror films about this video?
