Musical Family Tree

The Indiana Music Archive and Online Community

Hey Gang, we've been hard at work tricking out the MFT Archive.

Here's some of new features you will notice when browsing the site. Thanks to Jordan Wilson at Small Box for making all these changes the past few days. There are more on the way and I may just update this blog as we go.

First off we added individual request totals next to albums on band pages. A request means a download or stream from the page. Also, there is a very nifty Pop-Up player in the main player tool bar that I think many people have been missing. It's the little icon next to the "play all" graphic. So here you see both in a little screen shot from Margot's page.

Another much needed feature is pagination for the New Music section. This means that you can look at the new stuff added to MFT starting with the most recent and paging backward. So if you haven't been to the site in a while and see what has been added this is a good way to get caught up.

Here's a screen shot of the new pages functionality you will see on the New Music pages.

Another update is a New Music Feed which we are still working out a few kinks with but it should be 100% shortly. It will be posting all new music to the MFT Twitter and Facebook Pages. We also created new graphics for the Submit Band and Manage Band.

More to come!

What features would you like to see added to the MFT Archive?

I like the Zine idea- online or print. Obviously there are serious hurdles to the print version. My focus right now, with changes to the site, are mostly focused on things we can do, programming/design wise, that will enable bands and members to spread the content on the site, which is of course their content, to a wider audience. We are also looking, with the regular newsletters and other efforts, to highlight some of the better content being added to the site.

Keep the ideas coming. I'm hoping to roll out a new one soon that hasn't been listed here explicitly but I think will be appreciated.

Online zine that turns into a publicated zine.. With a link to the mix-tape of the month. There is so much music on here, it has to be somehow highlighted.

ah, geez, I knew you were in Portland, my bad. Awesome idea. It seems to kind of chime with the mixtape project.

Fortunately/Unfortunately I am located in Portland, OR... But I would love to make a Musical Family Tree oriented radio show. The radio station I am trained at is an independent community radio station called KBOO (www.kboo.fm)

I really hope that I can draw from all this great content on here.. Maybe I'll just do an on-air music zine, where I get MFT info and incorporate it with music and band replies.... really focus 100% on band history and musical experiments.

This is something I'm serious about... Indy will be able to tune in online, but as far as that.. I'll be hosting from the west coast. Think 'Free Zone' .... that shit was so awesome.

indyfitz, a syndicated show based on MFT content is something I have pitched (but not as the talent or host) to Jeb in the past. I think It would be a great idea, and could be launched as a podcast without any legwork. the host spots could be cut for the podacst incarnation with literally a cellphone, although it would be best to get good audio assets upfront.

So... we have a shitload of WQAX/WFHB people here, is there a possiblilty of launching on that air? Indyfitz, any more Indianapolis-oriented venues?

I do think this is a killer idea. There are hundreds of genre-or-locale oriented three hour shows on the air nationally, none with access to the catalog we've assembled here. People who don't know who great and diverse the archive is can't resonably discover it without a guide. Consistency of presentation, via an engaging host and reliable scholastic info about who did what when, can build an audience.

JB would be a good host. Dale would be a good host. I strongly suspect Jake would be a GREAT host, and working with the archive in this specific mode would be very strongly in his career interest as well. I think. Jake?

I'm actually thinking of creating a radio show, almost in the vein of "Free Zone" (rock!) ... I think I'm going to use a lot of the MFT content, and bands (with permission of course).... So that's another way to do it... Get an MFT radio show. Studio training is done, just need to implement a show idea. How's about that?

How about.. instead of a paper zine, we make a digital zine. Kind of like you do the newsletter, but on this web site. Mix tapes, band interviews, latest show reviews, photographs. But with the whole "you watch it, you write about it" theme.. I think the magic is in the content of this website, and finding fun ways to highlight it all is what MFT is waiting for. Usually it takes years and years to accumulate this much fuel for the fire, but all you have to do is crack open the music vault, or read blogs, or see what shows have come and gone, and you have plenty of stuff to put into an MFT zine.

Tour schedules would be fun too, if the bands could have their show dates on their personal page. Ya never know.. that sounds lofty.

Ok, we all ready talked about it, but I would really like to see some sort of mobile mft music app. Nothing fancy, maybe just a player with a weekly updated new music playlist.

Another idea, Stranger Lazy is going to be starting a record company, Rawsome Records... What I'm thinking is, you get the peeps you know in town w/ their own record companies, Jookabox, Transpanther, Standard, Secretly Canadian... and you work with these people to sell their catalogs. There are a million people in Indiana (and beyond) trying to do this. I think the answer is cohesiveness, co-operation, togetherness, and combining efforts. All for one.

Here doggy!

I'm all for MFT and the artists both making some money whether it's NP or not. I'm glad there is another way of getting us out there. If I would have sold an album in the 80s, I remember most little labels and artists would be happy to sell their t…

PJ- I thought of that too! I could use a new Ping hat. We aren't too far down the road of the NP thing to turn back. But John is right, if we can find a way to funnel money to artists then I'm all about having MFT make some of that transaction. It…
