Musical Family Tree Indiana Music MP3 Archive

Indiana MP3 Archive and Online Community

How about a list of comps featuring Indiana music through the years. It would be cool to list the comp. name and all the artists/song names, year released, etc. But if you don't know all that, just list what you know and maybe others can help fill in the blanks.

I think it would be great to get these loaded into the music archive here too. Some of these comps feature the only existing recordings of some bands.

Let's make the rules as follows: All-Indiana band/artist compilations or comps that feature at least one Indiana band/artist. I would include split-singles as comps, just for fun. And let's include soundtrack albums if they include Indiana artists.

Also, it has to be at least a quasi-real release (released to the general public in some sense) ... not a mix tape you made for your girlfriend.

Compilations have been important through the years to small bands getting heard, and they deserve some mention here. The compilers are often fans who put a lot of time, money and effort into these projects. Holla!

And don't forget the 200,000 live from bloomington comps.

As mentioned before, I did Hoagy Picks the Hits, and I do have the intention of getting it up here. I believe Dan Willems would be interested in posting Blow Your Head Off as well. Some of the Live from Bloomington comps are OK, though any selection by committee will not listen well from start to finish. As an aside, HPTH was a response to Live from Bloomington, though I was part of the LFB process several years.

Also, we really should look into getting permission to digitize the legendary Bloomington 1 compilation on B.R.B.Q. Records ('75 or '76, I believe). It is absolutely essential. Check this out:

Grace Davis
TJ Jones
Al Cobine Big Band
Kathy Canada
Screamin' Gypsy Bandits (feat. Terry Cook and Mark Bingham)
MX-80 Sound (pre-Rich Stim)
Bill Wilson ("Stardust Train", heavy rotation on WFBQ in the mid-'70's)
Bob Lucas
Caroline Peyton
What's It To Ya
Chinaboise (shared Bruce Anderson with MX - 80, Stim and Mahoney migrated over not long after)
John Clayton

It's the Rosetta stone of the Bloomington underground!

I've got a pretty clean lp; if anyone wants to figure out how to get permission, I'll handle the technical end.

Oh, and for the love of god, how can we forget THE MUNCIE SAMPLERS??!! The Belgian Waffles! cuts on those are better than the ones on Hoagy.

Hah, I was just looking at the Bloomington 1 LP yesterday. If we grab that one we gotta grab "This Years' Crop" from '79 too.

Gawd, permissions for that stuff, UNPOSSIBLE. Post and then ask?

Sorry, I'm hogging the thread -

Red Snerts

Segments and Son of Segments

These latter two were essential to my integration into the Bloomington scene when I moved down in the mid-80's.

Where's Jim Manion?

Haven't heard of the Segments comps. Who was on them?

I never did see that movie! Just scenes from it, during the CD release party at the Patio.

i've been hunting down a copy of this for the last year or so. the only copy
that i've found (without looking too hard) is owned by dean metcalf.
he has it tucked away somewhere.

for some reason i thought that frank dean was part of the soundtrack?

If you mean the movie, Otis, Garry Finley has a copy...if this is the one where Danny plays the Elvis type character.

I'll have to get back to you on that . . .

They both tended to be a bit on the more avant garde / less punk side, although there was plenty of punk there.

God, my wife is going to kill me for dragging out all those cassette boxes again . . .
