Ok, this is not a used record store story but...in '78 or '79 it was my great good fortune to find a copy of the Stooges' Fun House in the import bin of the Musicland store in the Muncie Mall! A major factor in why I'm not "Listening To Top 40 Today"

I haven't listened to top 40 since I was 12. Always fortunate enough to be around either, my dad's extensive and ecclectic collection or, when we were kids, the LIBRARY! we didn't have i-pods. & I had a friend whose dad was a DJ for 98 ROCK and he had the greatest record collection. & Chick's & friends' stuff...different times.

Muncie!? I spent my freshman year there! I'm surprised you could find anything!

Muncie, yeah, I grew up there. And before Jon Rans opened Repeat Performance the only record stores were Musicland, Stonehenge and some place out south Tillotson, I forget the name. The import bin at Musicland was small but interesting: Stooges, Eno, Nick Lowe... Then Repeat Performance came along and you could actually find Beefheart and Fugs and all kinds of stuff I'd only read about.

I remember Dave at Second Time Around playing a Genesis bootleg for a customer, I said something about how loud the audience sounded, he responded by saying "they sound like they are asleep" One of the funniest things I have ever heard, it was a major turning point for me. I also remember him playing Throbbing Gristle, which scared the bejesus out of me.

Hats off to Gary (Harlo Hickenloopers son?) who turned me on to lots of great music at The Record Company (right name for the store?) Which was in the stripmall where The Stone Mug was years later.

One day I was looking at records and couldn't find any thing to buy. He could sense my discomfort and asked what kind of music I liked, I replied that I was feeling let down by PROGRESSIVE ROCK and ROCK MUSIC in general and was considering JAZZ. He recommended The 801 Live album By Eno & Manzenara (801). Still have it. I also bought a copy of Trouser Press magazine which still smells like insense 30 years later!

John, I think about that record store a lot, but I never could remember the name. And I certainly never knew the owner was related to Harlow Hickenlooper. Wotta world.

I don't think he was the owner, I am 99% sure about the Harlo connection. I bought a lot of records there.

Quest and Marvin said he was also the drummer in The joint Chiefs of Staff.

Dave Shadow Meyers (Gizmos drummer in the later Dale Lawrence version) was the owner of The Record Co. Heard my first Punk Rock there when I was 19. Dave also put out a great local newsprint zine called Radio Free Rock. Also read about Gizmos, MX 80 Sound etc. I never looked back!

My most vivid memory of that store is seeing Never Mind The Sex Pistols, Here's The Gizmos in the 45 racks. First time I'd heard of them. Also, Tony Philputt posted this Joint Chiefs Of Staff video a while back.

Thanks for fillin in the blanks Marvin, I may still have a couple copies of Radio Free Rock, It was very influential for sure.
