List of local Venues throughout Indy music history.

Everyone has played in venues before, how about we get a listing of some old places that we've all played at. See how far back you can remember, and see if those places have been refurbished or renamed. Also welcome to add any favorites from the present tense. Any if you're feeling good, some places you'd like to see a venue put in.

Here's a good list that will be updated.

the arlington theater, later the ritz (my first big punk show and first movie ever, song of the south)
hoosier ballroom
the ritz (the one that was connected to a hotel on shadeland, might have the name wrong)
the patio
the avenue
the vogue

My favorite of all time was the Art Academy...Whipping Boy, Die Kruezen there in particular...

was it Ceasar's where the Bad Brains played?

what was that crazy warehouse where the Necros played? we spent alot of time throwing ourselves down a packing chute. best time EVER.

er, Dog College?

now the all-ages shows at Crazy Als make growing up in Indpls the most stellar of experiences...dang, we were lucky.

Dd anyone mention Cosmo's Pizza on 52nd Street between College and Keystone....or was it 54th??? or 49th street???I cant remember. Didnt I see basement shows there?

I don't know if Shorty's has been added yet. It was a basement club in Cincinnati. The only show I saw there was Nirvana in 1990.

...and didn't I see RHCP's play at Cosmo's??

I was just looking at the patio discussion and saw a mention of the replacements there.

Does anyone else remember them playing the Hunt and Chase? It was pre-'83, I was with John W, it was a weeknight...I know there were a few other people there...

anyway, I don't think they made it through even one song. I was about 16, and was pretty amazed that people could get away with that sort of thing.

Considering the hagiography that goes on up here (in mpls), I always remember that show...

to tranfer over from the zeppelin discussion...1..'.middleearth' @ 34th and illinoise* /or capital or senate? 2. tydall armory 3. the sheridan barn . ..... / does anyone remember the 'bull island' rock festival ? .. i'd say late summer of '71 or '72..... on a island in ohio river not far from evansville... rained a lot , muddy, unpleasent conditions.......bad drugs proliferating, people getting beat-up, almost a smaller midwest altamont.....we drove down from indy, assesed scene a couple hours, and straitaway left and went home ...good decision....

glad to see the Compound mentioned--I was just driving by there the other day and trying to remember exactly where it was. I remember going out Rural and then I can't remember the specifics.. Hey, and remember the giant missle shaped heater thing that could singe off your hair in the blink of an eye? That thing was massive.

"Third Base" on south Illinois was like the Cavern Club of Indy punk and new wave. Small, dingy, not much of a stage, but we could do whatever we wanted in there as long as the owner could sell drinks. It was the only place in town for early alternative - circa 79-81 or so. Every band in the area played there at some point. Well known as the home of the "No Wave Dance Parties."

Then "2147" opened up at 22nd and Talbot street for a few months, and, of course, Crazy Al's at 54th & College where the Jazz Kitchen is now. Man, if those walls could talk!

How about The Stabilizer in West Lafayette? It was the King of the Dives -- don't touch the bathroom doorknob, or the waitresses, but had great bands every weekend for years. And for the Razzmatazz: saw Todd Rundgren there 2 nights in a row. The first night he shaved his beard off, on stage, between songs.
