About Me
I lived in Bloomington from August 1984 to August 1990, initially moving there to go to college at IU. Somehow I actually managed to graduate on time. When I moved there I was almost 18. I did a lot of growing up. I was also heavily involved in the music scene. I was a WQAX DJ, lived in Collins, worked at the Runcible Spoon, and also lived in such notable houses as 1st & Grant, 1st & Henderson, and the Church Of Danger on S. 14th and Washington. In 1990 I moved to Eugene, Oregon, and have been here ever since. I visited Bloomington once in the year 2000. It was awesome. I'll be back later this year.

Autumn 1984 part 2 (and onward into the future)

I think there's a certain point in most of our lives when the door opens wide, and we realize there's much more to life than we thought. Growing up in this society, it may take some folks a while, but we eventually encounter a much bigger world than life with our parent(s) prepared us for. People react to this in very different ways, and one of the best possible vantage points to see and experience this transition shock is in a large state university. I wanted to talk some about what makes Bloo… Continue

Autumn 1984 part 1 - The Ricky's months

There has been so much crazy great stuff on this site already that I now post with a certain degree of self-awareness. Reading Stephen Canner's Your Real Dad post is like reading some weird parallel history of me if I had been a couple of years older. Totally fascinating. Anyway, onwards to more nostalgia! Note: For reference, the post before this discusses my gradual discovery of hardcore and hearing about this band called Jody Foster's Army, I had just missed seeing them in Texas. Remember,… Continue

Life Before Bloomington

I was 13, I think, and I saw the "Rock Is Sick" article in Time magazine, so that must have been 1979. Stiv Bators slashed himself in livid color as the magazine that Dylan had scorned in Don't Look Back" a decade-plus earlier once again found itself behind the times and hopelessly confused. However, I had very little real-world experience of these abstract ideas for the next couple of years while living in rural Virginia. I knew no punks, and don't even think I saw anybody dressing the part. T… Continue

Life After Bloomington

I figured I'd start out with this before I get to the reminiscing. At the least, it will prevent me from having to tell the same story over and over. In early 1990, I started dating Rachel Myers (of the Black Eyed Susans). I was confused and not totally happy in Bloomington. Suzy's death had hit me pretty hard 18 months before, I had gone through an exceptionally shitty breakup, and I was suffering from post-college-graduate angst. In April (I think) Jim Reed, an old high school friend of mine… Continue

Hi Steve, great to see you at the show. We didn't do too bad considering what old farts we are. I saw you with a video recorder, did you get any good footage? Holly posted some excellent vids on her page, check them out. Enjoy the summer...

Steve - sorry I missed Sunday night at Terrastock. The wife's back was acting up so I stayed home to help her. If you want to see what I've been up to, check the player on my page. It was great seeing you again. Hope to see you again sometime in the not-to-distant future.

oh yeah, do you know Rob from Climax Golden Twins? We hung out last night at the Sun City Girls show in L-ville. He said he knew Whybark really well but thought he knew you by your "nickname". The show was absolutely amazing.

hey Steve, good deal. Heather and I are sitting in with this band Sapat who will be performing at Terrastock on Saturday @ 8:30pm. We have to practice a lot to catch up with them, so I'm gonna miss the WR reunion. Hopefully we can cross paths while you're in L-ville.

hey steve, you're right, i don't remember you... was that one evening in summer 89 the only time we met? was that at your house? i've kind of tried to block that particular moment of my life (which was marked by some weird impulsive delusions that led to certain rather unsatisfying events) from my mind. but nice to hear from you anyway! about the yeastie girlz tape, i have copies but thank you anyway. i actually put it into mp3s a year or two ago but never got around to giving them appropriate "song" names and cammie never got around to posting them on the yg site (which she maintains). save the tape, it may be worth something on ebay someday. it also happens to be the best thing the yeastie girlz ever did. i only wish it were video instead of just audio. yg was more comedy theater than a band.

How's it going Steve. I don't think I've seen you since you left Bloomington. Remember you had that computer that used cp/m ?

I had a timex/sinclair keypad computer and a TI-99 back in the early days. They were amusing but really couldn't do all the much without a lot of time spent.

Hope to see you when you visit.
