About Me
Bloomington is my hometown. With a couple years overseas, I lived there from 1976 until 1990. Since 1990, I have lived in Seattle, which actually means I have lived in Seattle longer than I did Bloomington. If you were interested in punk rock in Indiana, especially in Bloomington or Indy, between 1983 and 1988 or so, I probably made an effort to get to know you. I have been blogging since 2002 at mike.whybark.com, and maintain a raft of subsidiary sites, some of which may be of interest to MFT people.

I learned about the MFT project from Jeb just as they were launching it several years ago - I think Jeb found an archive of some Bloomington music I host at mp3.whybark.com and emailed me about the software I was using to present the archive.
What bands are you or have you been in?
BLOOMINGTON:
Modock, bass (1988-1989), modock.whybark.com, with Mike Hurtt, Matt Uhlmann, and Dave Cruse
The Vortex, bass (1990), with Mike Goss, Steve Bouton, and Tim Hommey. We only played one show.

SEATTLE
Fat Mona, bass, (1992-1993) - Tod Collins, Odin Bettinger, Jim Thompson
The Bareknuckle Boxers, bkb.whybark.com, mandolin, (1996-2000 +/-) - Odin Bettinger, Karel Trubac, Karl Kill, Chelle Wagner, Will Hollauer, Greg Brotherton, Lance Biggs, Barry Semple, Blake Carter, Sean Kearney, and more folks after I left.
What city are you from?

S.P.F.C.C.M.T., dig?

I gotta say it. George Carlin? Bigger loss than Tim Russert. Better-spoken motherfucker, too. But, as George pointed out, mayflies live ony one day. Sometimes it rains. This old MetaFilter post might help with the appreciation of my perspective, o… Continue

Vortex

As I was going through tapes to digitize, I was quite surprised to discover a long-forgotten direct-to-four-track recording which Dan Willems kindly executed for us sometime in 1990. The… Continue

RFNR DVD

Thanks and as the kids say BIG UPS to Dr. Holly for sending along a copy of the RFNR DVD. Zac and I and Holly have mentioned watching it in passing to one another here, but prolly it needs more than a passing chat. I watched Eric work on the damn thing for five years, checking in on his progress on visits back as I went through a move, a marriage, and a divorce and Eric went through a couple of painful breakups of his own. I had frankly assumed the video was not fated for completion, so it was… Continue

Departed Friends

As I realized yesterday that someone important in the lives of many of you had passed away, I was of course taken back to reflect on my own experiences of loss. I don't believe I ever met LonPaul, although it's equally possible that we were introduced briefly during one of my infrequent visits to Bloomington. I've still been aware of his importance to so many of my musician friends back home, it seems to me roughly beginning when I moved out here in 1990. My thoughts are with LonPaul's family… Continue

Yes, on Deer Creek. The few brain cells I have left are tingling on that one, but I don't think the girl I'm trying to recall is Jeane. Maybe a couple doses of Aricept (Alzheimer's med) will give me a jump start! So many foggy memories...

Wow, thanks for steering me to the pictures of Suzy. I remember loving her hair. She had a younger friend, whose name I cannot recall, who lived with her family in a 'commune' outside of town. I have fond memories of us out there at a great May Day party.

I was just referred to this website over the weekend and your name is all over the place. We seem to have known a lot of the same people, and I do recall your name, but in particular I was friends for a brief but lovely time with your sister, Susie.

Wow, nice to hear something,...nice. It was odd feelin' uncool just cuz' we were "over 21" .
The first time I visited B'ton (i was 18), we opened for The Jetson's @ the upstairs of Bullwinkle's(wasn't even called 2nd Story yet), after our show took our guitars out to stash in the car and were DENIED re-admittance to the club cuz' of our age (they didn't give a fuck we'd just opened the show!).
So I do know that pain. Appreciate the positive memory.
Tag, (electrician and erstwhile Flies mngr) used to refer to you as "Mr. Half& half" cuz of your famous hair and beard style.
